Grammar: Complex Sentences

Joe Millie and I went to the park. We went there. Because it
was time for the party.
Notes:

An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence.
Example: We built a fort.
A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence and begins with
a subordiating conjuction. A subordinating conjunction tell where,
when, why, or how. Some common subordinationg conjuctions are
after, although, before, because, if, since, until, when, where, and while.

Example: where we could see the river
A complex sentence contains an independent clause and one or more
dependent clauses.

Example: We built our fort where we could see the river.
Use a comma after the dependent clause when it comes at the
beginning of the sentence.

Example: Because the rain lasted so long, we worried about
flooding.

Notes:
Use comma before a conjuntion to separate two independent clauses
in compound sentences.
 A depedent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction.
 In complex sentences that begin with dependent clauses, add a
comma after the last word of the dependent clause.

