We went there. Because it was time for the party. Notes: An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. Example: We built a fort. A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence and begins with a subordiating conjuction. A subordinating conjunction tell where, when, why, or how. Some common subordinationg conjuctions are after, although, before, because, if, since, until, when, where, and while. Example: where we could see the river A complex sentence contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Example: We built our fort where we could see the river. Use a comma after the dependent clause when it comes at the beginning of the sentence. Example: Because the rain lasted so long, we worried about flooding.
