Comprehension: Description

A text structure that uses description to
present information is almost always found
in nonfiction. When using description, an
author includes many details to explain how
people experience something through their
five senses or how something works.
Description helps the reader understand a
topic that has many variations or parts.
Comprehension: Analyze text structure



Writers writing nonfiction use special techniques
to organize their texts. They know that one kind of
structure may better help the reader understand a
particular topic, and the author’s purpose may
also influence how he or she organizes the text.
You should look for clues that let you know the
type of structure the author is using.
Being aware of the text structure will help you
identify the author’s perspective on the subject.
Vocabulary : Greek Roots


English words are not only based on Latin roots
but Greek as well.
Greek roots are the source of many roots,
prefixes, and suffixes in English. Knowing where
these words come from can help readers and
writers spell, learn, and remember the meanings
of unfamiliar words more easily.

Most ants build their homes underground.// Ants
dig by scooping dirt with their mandibles
(jaws).//As they chew the dirt,/ it mixes with their
saliva to form little bricks.// Then they stack the
little bricks together to reinforce the
tunnels.//Finally,/ the ants carry the excess dirt
outside with their mandibles,/and it gradually
forms an anthill.//
