Building Background
Gerardo swung on the swings until he got as high in the air as
he could. Then he ran across the park to the seesaw and her
rode that with his friend Adrian for a while. Then they went
to the sliding board. Gerardo loved the park. It was near his
house, it was clean, and it was safe. Every day there were
other kids there for him to play with . He liked being outside
on the grass, where he could hear the birds.

Gerardo sat in the uncomfortable plastic chair. Next to him
was a table covered with boring magazines about make-up
and dresses. Gerardo could smell perfumes and chemicals
and shampoos. All of these smells made his sneeze. His
mother was sitting in a barber’s chair getting a hair cut. All
the customers and hair stylists were women. Gerardo hated
coming to the hair stylist with his mother. There was nothing
to do and nobody to talk to. He had to stay for more than an
hour once a month. Gerardo would give anything for another
mother to come in with her son so he could play with
somebody!
