Meiosis
A type of cell division
Background Vocabulary
• Haploid: a cell with one
set of chromosomes
• Diploid: a cell with two sets
of chromosomes
• Gamete: sex cell
• Somatic cell: body cell
• Egg: female sex cell
• Sperm: male sex cell
More Background
• Somatic cells are diploid
cells
• Gametes are haploid cells
• In humans, diploid cells
have 46 chromosomes
• In humans, haploid cells
have 23 chromosomes
Meiosis
• Purpose: to make egg and
sperm cells
• Starts with one diploid
somatic cell
• Ends with four haploid
gametes
• Meiosis makes sexual
reproduction possible
• Sexual Reproduction: the
production and fusion of
haploid gametes

Process of Meiosis
• Before meiosis can begin,
DNA replication has to
occur.
• Meiosis has two divisions,
each with four steps (total
of 8 steps)
• After chromosomes are
replicated, homologous
chromosomes pair up
Meiosis (cont.)
• Homologous chromosomes
line up in the center of the
cell, then separate.
• The cells split almost
completely into two cells
• In each of the two cells,
sister chromatids stay
paired
• Sister chromatids line up in
the center, then separate.
Meiosis (cont)
• The two cells divide to
become four cells
• One chromosome from
each pair goes into each
cell
Results of Meiosis
• Ends with four gametes
• Gametes are genetically
different
• Allows chromosome
number to remain constant
in species
