The School of the Prophets

presidency of the school of the prophets, established for
their instruction in all things that are expedient for them,
even for all the officers of the church, or in other words,
those who are called to the ministry in the church,
beginning at the high priests, even down to the deacons—

• Established in February 1833.
• First met in the Whitney Store in Kirtland

• Those who attended had to prepare themselves to come:
• The brethren washed before coming. v.138 - And ye shall not
receive any among you into this school save he is clean from the
blood of this generation.

•The President arrived early, offered prayer, and prepared himself. v.

• As brethren entered, a formal salutation was given. v. 132-133
• The President washed the feet of those who entered. The ordinance
of washing of feet was instituted in January 1833. v. 139
•The brethren mostly taught one another.

• Students began meeting in the Whitney store in the early morning. They
continued there until the late afternoon. Often the students fasted.
•The number of students ranged from 14 to 25.
• Their first topic was English grammar. They studied history, science, etc. Later
they hired a Hebrew teacher. Sidney Rigdon and others prepared Lectures on
Faith.
• School met for three sessions Jan-Apr 1833, 1834-1835, 1835-1836.
