Prophase/ Prometaphase
• Chromatin condenses into dicrete
Chromosomes
• Nucleoli disappear
• Chromosomes have the two identical sister
chromatids
• Mitotic Spindle begins to form
• The Centrosomes move away from each other
• Nuclear Envelope fragments
• Chromosomes become more condensed
Prophase Pictures
Metaphase
• Centrosomes are apposite poles of the cell
• Chromosomes are at the metaphase plate, that is
equidistant between the spindle’s two poles
• For each chromosome the kinetochores of the
sister chromatids are attached to kinetochore
microtubules coming from opposite poles
Metaphase Pictures
Anaphase
• Shortest Stage of mitosis and only lasts a few
minutes
• Begins when the cohesin proteins are cleaved,
allowing the two sister chromatids to part
• The daughter chromosomes begin moving toward
opposite ends of the cell
• The cell becomes longer and the microtubules
lengthen
• Both ends of the cell have a complete set of
chromosomes
Anaphase Pictures
Telophase
• Two daughter nuclei form
• Nucleoli reappear
• Chromosomes become less dense
• Any remaining spindle microtubules are depolymerized
• The Division of one nucleus into two genetically identical
nuclei is now complete
