MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Xin Yuan has successfully made it through the year once again despite facing many
challenges. Our staff and volunteers have put in significant time and effort to
maintain Xin Yuan’s programmes and services consistently, ensuring the physical,
mental and emotional well-being of our beneficiaries. Not-withstanding the
challenging times, we have certainly grown to become a significant part of our
community and a pillar for the less fortunate elderly and children. I would like to
thank all the staff and volunteers who have made this possible with their
perseverance and hard work; our beneficiaries who have continued to place their
trust in our services; and our partners who have steadily supported us in our efforts.
As we move ahead, we should continue to seek active collaborations with schools, corporation and grassroots
organisations and further existing collaborations. These collaborations play an important role in supporting
our services to the less fortunate while opening up numerous opportunities for our beneficiaries. More
importantly, they provide essential supports in our fundraising efforts.
Besides carrying out regular reviews of existing programmes, we can explore more avenues and innovative
ways to assist the needy in our community as our society and environment evolve continuously. This will allow
us to adapt to the changing needs of the less fortunate elderly and children while aligning with government
schemes and goals.
Xin Yuan will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in the coming year and this is certainly a milestone for us. Let
us continue to collectively work towards our mission and be committed to serving the needy. I look forward
to seeing Xin Yuan expand its outreach and to celebrating Xin Yuan’s achievements with all our staff,
volunteers, partners and beneficiaries.

THE XIN YUAN STORY
Why are we called Xin Yuan?

Translated from Chinese Characters 心愿 means heart’s desire.

To the best of our capacity and capability, we strive to fulfill and realize our beneficiaries’
utmost hearts’ desires.
Established in May 2005 as a registered society, we are a relatively young organization operating in the
Bishan-Toa Payoh area with a mission to enable the elderly to live with dignity and independence, and to
enhance the intellectual, physical and emotional well-being of needy children.
Despite our young age, our ten (10) members are armed with many years of experience in voluntary services
that range from caring for the chronically sick, those suffering from dementia, and the immobile elderly to
mentoring students. Within the team, we had registered nurses, a teacher, geriatric care professionals, a
healthcare manager and corporate executives. These diverse backgrounds, expertise and training have
served our mission well.
We had a humble beginning. Starting without a roof over our heads in 2005, we held our meetings regularly
at fast-food restaurants to fill service gaps and identify emerging needs. Most of our planned events and
activities are held at or carried out with base at Toa Payoh South Community Club (TPSCC), which the staff
of the People’s Association had graciously consented.
Over the years, we have become our beneficiaries’ trusted source of physical, emotional and social support.
Apart from their physical ailments which they come to us to help them alleviate, they bring along many of
their personal issues, and rely on our best efforts to get them resolved. We treasure this hard-won trust and
will continue to fulfill their needs in years to come, ageing population and engage individuals in activities to
improve strength and mobility. Thus gain independence in leading healthier lifestyle .
We have been encouraged by the efforts of our nation’s leaders in assisting the elderly to lead active and
healthy lives, as well as providing opportunities and nurturing every child to develop his or her potential to
the fullest. We intend to be part of these efforts, and take pride in serving the needs of our beneficiaries.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
OUR PARTNERSHIPS
Collaborations with Schools
As with previous years, XYCC conducted projects with student and
teacher volunteers from various primary to tertiary institutions. The
activities and events held included home-cleaning, concerts, outings
and celebrations during the festive occasions for the needy elderly
and children. We have also had frequent visits by volunteers to the
Activity & Wellness Centre to interact with the elderly. These visits
have livened up the atmosphere and provided the elderly with more
activities to participate in. At the same time, our children have had
more opportunities to broaden their learning through outings and
workshops.
Notably, few of the schools which participated in appreciation of arts
and experiential projects are new partners, including Raffles Girls’
Secondary School, Raffles Institution (Junior College) and Singapore
Management University.
The following are some of the events that were organised:




Mid-autumn concert celebrations with Catholic High School (Primary)
Catholic High School Family Day
Christmas Party 2013 with student volunteers from Raffles Girls’ School
Visit to the Activity & Wellness Centre by students from Ang Mo Kio Secondary School
With greater interaction and bonding between volunteers and our beneficiaries, these events have allowed
us to increase awareness on volunteerism and community outreach. Many of the volunteers’ experiences
have also encouraged them to continue serving the less-privileged elderly and children at XYCC.

Collaborations with Corporations and Grassroots Organisations
Besides volunteers from schools, XYCC has collaborated with corporations and grassroots organisations
to organise more activities and events for our young and elderly beneficiaries. These activities range from
games at the Activity & Wellness Centre to outings to the newly opened River Safari. Staff from some
corporations also visit and clean the homes of our elderly beneficiaries.
The following are some of the activities organised:


Children’s Day Visit to the Singapore Zoo with IBM
Elderly beneficiaries’ visit to River Safari with Thomson CC
Our long-standing collaborations with Grassroots Organisations have continued this year. Both our elderly
and children beneficiaries have been invited to join these organisations for various dinners and
celebrations during festive occasions. These opportunities have been greatly appreciated and enjoyed by
our beneficiaries.

PROGRAMMES FOR THE ELDERLY
Home Care Services
XYCC has continued to provide home care services to 75 elderly beneficiaries who are less mobile, bedridden
or home-bound, age 50 to 101. These essential services, provided free-of-charge, include health check-ups,
counselling, caregiver training and monthly blood-sugar level tests conducted by qualified nurses, monthly
grocery distribution and twice-weekly bread distribution. Besides ensuring the physical and mental wellbeing of the elderly, the nurses also help them with simple tasks such as letter-reading. These home care
services provide the elderly with much-needed emotional and physical support, and have continued to be
well-received.
Healthy Exercise Programme
XYCC’s Group Exercise Programme has remained popular amongst the elderly beneficiaries as it plays a
crucial role in improving their health and fitness, while providing them with opportunities to interact with
others. These group exercises, which are carried out at the Activity & Wellness Centre, enhance the elderly’s
balance and agility, amongst other things. They are also encouraged to be more independent and responsible
for their own well-being, as nurses and dieticians provide tips on health and diets.
This programme caters to elderly with various levels of dependency and intensity. Those who are wheelchairbound and highly dependent undergo physiotherapy sessions and individually tailored exercises with trained
physiotherapists to enhance their mobility and independence. These individualised training programmes
have resulted in significant fitness improvements in many of the beneficiaries.

Day Care Services at our Activity & Wellness Centre
Our Activity & Wellness Centre provides 90-120
elderly beneficiaries aged 50-100 with day care
services and is a place where the elderly can
interact with one another. After undergoing
expansion in early 2013, the Centre is now better
equipped with a series of equipment and
machines for rehabilitation and therapy. This
encourages the elderly to maintain or improve
their health, agility and strength through
regular exercise. In addition, elderly who are
afflicted with stroke and Parkinson’s Disease can rehabilitate and recover well under the close supervision of
trained personnel. Neuro-feedback rehabilitation is also carried out for some of our beneficiaries.
At the Centre, regular healthy cooking demonstrations
are conducted by volunteers, the elderly beneficiaries
and even their caregivers. Participants are taught how
to cook healthy dishes and also learn about the
nutritional value in these dishes. In addition, healthy
and nutritional porridge is cooked for the elderly at the
Centre every day. These initiatives have helped to raise
awareness on the importance of balanced diets and
eating healthily, and have been popular amongst the
beneficiaries.
The Centre provides a venue for many elderly to
come together for activities and events such as
games, performances and festive celebrations.
Through these activities, the elderly can interact
with other members of the community and
volunteers. With the Centre, many of our
beneficiaries are able to remain active and
engaged in the wider community as they age.
Weekday Therapeutic Programme
At Toa Payoh South Community Club, therapy machines and other exercise equipment such as pedal bikes,
pulley exercisers and finger dexterity apparatus are set up on weekday mornings. Elderly beneficiaries,
together with their caregivers, can attend therapy sessions under the supervision of volunteers. These
sessions help to enhance their strength, mobility and fitness.

PROGRAMMES FOR THE CHILDREN
Buddy Mentoring & Buddy Reading
At Toa Payoh South Community Club, children aged 4 to 6 attend buddy reading sessions while academically
weaker students from Primary 1 to Secondary 2 attend buddy mentoring sessions. These sessions are
conducted by student volunteers, in Junior College/university/National Service, who serve as a role model to
the beneficiaries.
Buddy reading sessions help to encourage the habit of reading from a young age so as to build up a good
foundation in the English Language and in communication skills. The programme is also designed to nurture
creative thinking through additional activities such as drawing, colouring and role-playing.
Buddy mentoring sessions involve the coaching of children in English, Science and Mathematics. Innovative
and interactive methods are used during sessions to promote greater interest in these school subjects.
Tuition Classes
At our Activity & Wellness Centre and Toa
Payoh South CC, tuition classes are held for 50
needy children, age 7 to 17. These classes are
designed to align to the Ministry of Education’s
objectives and makes use of various teaching
methods such as drama to generate greater
interest in learning. The high ratio of tutors to
students allows more attention to be given to
each child and for classes to be tailored
according to their progress.
School Holiday Programmes & Developmental Workshops
During the school holidays, various activities and outings are organised to provide the children beneficiaries
with the chance to pick up new skills and broaden their horizons. For instance, student volunteers brought
the children for a learning journey to the Singapore Science Centre.
Apart from learning, the programmes carried out also help to develop their characters and impart life skills.
A Magic of Science workshop was held to inculcate greater interest in science through carrying out household
experiments while a board games session was organised to highlight the importance of teamwork and other
life skills. These workshops have been well-received and greatly enjoyed by the children.
Additional assistance programme for children and their families
To help the children beneficiaries consistently attend the programmes and tuition classes, an EZ-link top-up
scheme is put in place to alleviate their transport costs while their families are provided with monthly
groceries. Every year, the children are also provided with basic necessities for school such as school shoes and
stationary while gift vouchers are given to some of their families during the festive season.
