This is an introductory course into the theory and practice of analyzing basic financial statements, the
course includes presentation of the topics relating to overall business environment and problems
related to generating financial reports. The latter means explanation of the goals, qualitative
characteristics and contents of financial information.
Some basic knowledge of accounting and valuation methods is expected.
The main financial reports, i.e. balance-sheet, income statement, statement of cash-flow and statement
of retained earnings shall be studied in-depth.
The following stage shall involve calculation of major financial ratios covering principal facets of
corporate performance: liquidity, turnover, profitability, market valuations. The cost of different
components of capital and the problem of optimizing the capital structure shall be tackled as well.
This course aims at granting students the basic skills necessary: to find their bearings in the intricate
world of financial indicators, realize a company’s financial standing and performance, grasp problems
within corporate environment and be informed of the existing trends. The course is developed for all
those wishing to improve their understanding of corporate finance and business practice.
Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student is supposed to:
