Thomas is commander of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. The center is composed of two wings and one direct reporting group; the 498th Nuclear Systems Wing and the 377th Air Base Wing both at Kirtland AFB and the 526th ICBM Support Group, Hill AFB, Utah. The AFNWC is responsible for the entire scope of the nuclear weapons support functions and comprises units at Kirtland AFB; Tinker AFB, Okla.; Ramstein Air Base, Germany; Hill AFB, Utah and Lackland AFB, Texas. General Thomas was commissioned through the ROTC program in 1980. He served in a variety of career fields including missile and space operations and maintenance. The general has commanded an Air Force station, a space launch squadron, a missile operations group and a space wing. His staff assignments include executive officer to the Vice Commander of Air Force Space Command, and assistant executive officer to the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff. He also served as Assistant Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs, Africa, and International Negotiations, on the Joint Staff. In this position he represented the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the Moscow Treaty delegation. As the chairman's representative, he protected the critical strategic offensive arms force structure. General Thomas also served as vice commander, U.S. Air Force Warfare Center, Nellis AFB, where he was the center's focal point for air, space, and information warfare expertise.
