Course Description
A one semester course for science majors. Not open for credit to students who have credit in
CHE 1315 or 1415. Does not substitute for CHE 1315. Principle concepts and theories of
chemistry are examined. These fundamental principles are applied to a variety of topics such as
chemical bonding, chemical reactions, states of matter, solutions, electrochemistry, and nuclear
chemistry. The descriptive chemistry of some common elements and compounds is included.
Prerequisite: MATH 0013 or equivalent..
Course Prerequisite
MTH 0013 or equivalent

Scientific calculator (does NOT have to be graphing) – will be used nearly every class (cell
phone calculators will NOT be allowed on exams)

Laboratory Safety Goggles (found in bookstore)
Laboratory Coat or Apron (found in bookstore)
1
Attendance Policy & Classroom Etiquette
Lab will be held on Wednesdays from 10:00am – 12:50pm in Room MC -603. Lab will start
promptly. Lecture will be held on Mondays & Wednesdays from 8:30am – 9:50am in MC 315.
Please be prompt.
Please put your cell phone/pager on vibrate or turn it off. In respect of the instructor and other
students, it is expected that your phone not ring during class and that you not have phone
conversations during class. Your success in this course weighs heavily on your ability to attend
ALL lectures and labs. You should plan vacations/trips around this course. If you are absent,
you should contact the instructor immediately. You should get missed notes from a fellow
classmate. I post Power Point notes on Blackboard and you should print these off BEFORE
class.
Homework and Make-up Work
Out of class assignments will consist of reading the text, solving problems, and answering
questions from the text and handouts. Homework will be graded as a completion grade and will
be due at the beginning of lab. After recording your grade, we will go over the correct answers
in class. It is strongly encouraged that you do homework problems as you may see similar
problems on exams! There is no make-up/late work on homework…if you do not have it when
it is due, it is a zero.
If one exam is missed for whatever reason, the make-up will consist of a comprehensive final
exam at the end of the semester. The score on the final exam will replace ONE missed regular
exam. Any additional missed exams will remain as a zero and cannot be made up. If you know
in advance that you are going to be absent on a test day, the test can be taken in advance (with
my permission and with a minimum of four days notice). There will be no make-up for the
final exam. If you have not missed any regular exams, the comprehensive final exam is optional.
You can either choose not to take the final, or you may take the final to replace your lowest exam
score. If your score on the final is lower than your lowest exam score, your lowest exam score
will remain. In other words, taking the final cannot hurt your grade. One make-up lab is built
into the schedule…all additional missed labs will be recorded as a zero.
Laboratory
Important directions and safety concerns are addressed at the beginning of each lab. Be prompt
to lab or points will be deducted from your lab grade for tardiness. Deductions will be as
follows: tardy during first 10 minutes = 3pt deduction; tardy 11-20 minutes = 10pt
deduction; tardy by more than 20 minutes = you will not be allowed to participate in lab
and will forfeit all 20pts. When you are finished with your lab you may leave the area,
however do not expect to leave early. A lab data sheet will be turned in for each experiment.
You will need your lab manual for each lab! I will NOT supply copies of lab data sheets. No
lab report will be accepted late and no lab report will be accepted for a lab that you did not
attend. You will be responsible for attending each lab period, performing the activity, and
turning in the completed lab data sheet on time. Keep in mind, lab partners may have the same
data, but should not have identical lab reports.
2
Students must wear goggles, either a lab coat or apron, & close-toed shoes at all times during
lab. Students not wearing these items will not be allowed to participate in the laboratory and will
forfeit all points associated with that laboratory exercise. For safety reasons, no food or drinks
are allowed in the laboratory at any time.
Grading
Grades will be calculated from homework, laboratory reports, exams, and a final exam as
follows:
Homework
Laboratory
Exams
Final Exam
10 @ 20 pts each = 200 pts
13 @ 20 pts each = 260 pts
5 @ 150 pts each = 600 pts
1 @ 150 pts (replaces)
__
Total Points = 1060 pts
A = 954 – 1060 pts
B = 848 – 953 pts
C = 742 – 847 pts
D = 636 – 741 pts
F=
0 – 635 pts
Grades will be posted to Blackboard (Bb) as they are graded. This enables you to monitor your progress through
the course; therefore you are strongly encouraged to check Bb often. Semester grades are calculated by raw point
totals, not percentages. I do not round up.
General Education Goal Statement & Institutional Statement
The General Education Goals are designed to ensure that graduates of Tulsa Community College
have the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to carry them successfully through their work and their
personal lives. Each student is responsible for being aware of the information contained in the
TCC Catalog, TCC Student Handbook, TCC Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook, and
semester information listed in the Class Schedule.
Failure to Withdraw Policy
Failure to withdraw may result in the student’s receiving a regular grade of “F” at the end of the
semester.
Plagiarism Policy
Plagiarism is claiming, indicating, or implying that the ideas, sentences, or words of another
writer are your own; it includes having another writer do work claimed to be your own, copying
the work of another and presenting it as your own, or following the work of another as a guide to
ideas and expression that are then presented as your own. The student should review the relevant
sections of the TCC Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook.
3
Academic Dishonesty or Misconduct
Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned nor tolerated at campuses within the TCC
system. Academic dishonesty is behavior in which a deliberately fraudulent misrepresentation is
employed in an attempt to gain undeserved intellectual credit, either for oneself or for another.
Academic misconduct is behavior that results in intellectual advantage obtained by violating
specific standard, but without deliberate intent or use of fraudulent means. The student should
review the relevant sections of the TCC Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook.
**Always be aware of how your body language could be perceived (especially when testing).
Looking off of someone else’s paper, having notes out during a test, or any other form of
cheating will not only result in a zero, but can lead to dismissal from the course and/or college
and noted in your academic record. You should avoid academic dishonesty at all costs!
DISABILITY RESOURCES: It is the policy and practice of Tulsa Community College to
create inclusive learning environments. Accommodations for qualifying students in compliance
with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are
available. To request accommodations, contact the Education Access Center (EAC) at
eac@tulsacc.edu or call (918) 595-7115 (Voice). Deaf and hard of hearing students may text
(918) 809-1864.
Computer Services Acceptable Use
Access to computing resources is a privilege granted to all TCC faculty, staff, and students. Use
of TCC computing resources is limited to purposes related to the College’s mission of education,
research, and community service. Student use of technology is governed by the Computer
Services Acceptable Use Statements/Standards found in the TCC Student Code of Conduct
Policy Handbook. These handbooks may be obtained by contacting any Student Activities or
Dean of Student Services office.
