6. Throughout the book we hear Rose
Mary’s complaint: “I’m a grown woman now,
why can’t I do what I want to do?” At what
point can adults do whatever they want, if at
all? [pg. 74]
7. Jeannette Walls has said, “If I had lost my
belief in my father, I would have lost my
belief in the future.” What do you think she
means? Why do you think she defended her
father longer than anyone else in the family?
Did he deserve this loyalty? [pg. 79]
8.
Are rules necessary for children’s healthy development? At
what point do they become restricting and limiting [pg.91]
9.
Jeannette describes Grandma Smith as a woman who “has
strong opinions about the way things ought to be done –
how to dress, how to talk, how to organize your time, how to
cook and keep house, how to manage your finances…” [pg.
93]
10. Jeannette Walls has said, “We didn’t have food, but at the
same time, we were luckier than other kids.” In what ways
do you think they were “luckier”? Do you think if you were
Jeannette, you would be able to say the same thing? [pg.
95]

Conformity
11. Is there value in nonconformity? Do we live in a society
that encourages being different? [Pg. 109]
12.Bob Dylan once wrote…..“A man is a success
if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at
night and in between does what he wants to
do.” Although it seems a stretch to use the
word “success” in any discussion of the Walls’
lifestyle, using Dylan’s definition, could we say
that Rex and Rose Mary were a success?
How do you define success? [pg. 113]
Recap pp. 120-144
• Dad goes on a violent, drunken rampage and threatens Mom with a butcher
knife.
• Mom decided it was time for another move/adventure, this time with West
Virginia being the destination. She thought Dad’s parents might help get him
under control.
• A month later, they arrived in Welch, WV and stayed with Erma (Grandma),
Grandpa, and Uncle Stanley in their run-down house.
• Because Welch appears so poverty stricken, Mom cheerfully announces that
she will probably be the only artist in town and her career could take off
there!
• Mom enrolled them in school and the teachers and kids were mean because
they thought Jeannette was uppity. The kids were bullied mercilessly.
• Jeannette “saves” a boy from a vicious dog and one of the mean girls saw it
happen.
• Jeannette becomes friends with this girl, who happens to be black. This
causes Erma and Uncle Stanley to turn on Jeannette and Jeannette tells
them not to use the N word.
• Mom and Dad don’t defend Jeannette and tell her to just get along with the
bigoted relatives, which confuses Jeannette. Mom says Jeannette must look
for a “redeeming” quality in Erma.
13. If parents aren’t getting along, is it better for them
to live separately? [pg. 125]
14. Is there a point when it is time for one to give up
one’s dream? If so, what is that point? [pg. 133-135]
15. Should an adult who was abused as a child forgive
and try to help the abuser? [148]
16. Everyone on Little Hobart Street in Welch is poor, and
“everyone grudgingly accepted some form of public aid.”
The Walls, however, refused any kind of help, although
they were the poorest family on the street. Is it more
important to have pride or have food? [pg.159]
17.
Do you think that difficult family circumstances bring
siblings closer together or push them apart? [pg. 167]
18. Jeannette Walls has said in interviews that because
she had so little as a child, she really appreciated
things when she finally got them. Do you think that
parents should give their kids less so they appreciate
things more? What about high school? Would you
appreciate it more if you had to pay for it? [pg. 177]
19. Mom says that welfare “would cause irreparable
psychological damage” to the kids. “Once you go on
welfare, it changes you. Even if you get off welfare, you
never escape the stigma that you were a charity case.
You’re scarred for life.” Does it scar people for life if
they rely on welfare or charity? [pg. 188]
20. If kids are content with the way they are living, but
Family Services (DHS) doesn’t like it, who is right? The
kid/s or Family Services? [pg. 194]
21. Jeannette Walls has said, “Some people think my
parents are absolute monsters and should’ve had their
children taken away from them. Some think they were
these great free-spirited creatures who had a lot of wisdom
that a lot of parents today don’t [have].” What do you think?
Should the kids have been taken away? If so, what should
have happened to the kids? If not, what benefits did the
kids have by staying with the parents? [pg. 213]
22. How much do you think the Walls children helped each
other survive their circumstances? [pg. 230]
23. Should drug addicts and alcoholics be forgiven and
helped when their actions cause problems for others? If
yes, how should society and their friends and family help
them? If not, what should happen to them? [pg. 254]
24. What do you think kept the Walls children from getting
into serious trouble and becoming like their parents? [pg.
259]
