Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution
in the Holy Cross tradition,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Today, Wednesday, October 26th we will be having first
semester Parent-Teacher Conferences. These are very
important and give you a chance to check and see how your
child is really doing.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school
in the Holy Cross tradition,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are set for one time each
semester. The first semester date will be Wednesday, October 26th, from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. We do hope you are able to
attend. To be sure that you will have a parking place, our sports teams and other activities will not be
on campus for this evening.
For these parent conferences, our teachers are set up alphabetically at tables in the gym and in
the cafeteria. (The beginning of the alphabet is in the cafeteria.) Each teacher’s name is above
his/her head, so it is easy to find them. There are no appointments; parents simply go to the tables of the teachers they
wish to visit. There may be a wait for some teachers. If there are other parents waiting to see a particular teacher, the
parents are asked to limit their conversation to five minutes. If there is no one in line, parents may converse with a teacher
as long as they would like. If a certain teacher has a line and if you are concerned about your child in his/her class, you
should definitely wait in line to speak with him. If the conversation requires more than five minutes, you can keep an
eye on his table and go back to him later, or you can set up an appointment with him for another time.
There is no schedule, but we do respect the 7:30 conclusion time, since our teachers have had a very long day. We begin
promptly at 5:00.
Students may attend, although very few do.
We look forward to meeting you this evening at Parent-Teacher conferences.

Attention, senior parents.
According to the records of Prestige Portraits, 214 of the 316 members of the senior class have not yet had their
yearbook portraits taken. That’s over 67 percent! For the sake of consistency in the book, all seniors must have their
yearbook picture taken at Prestige, even if they have had other senior pictures taken elsewhere. Don’t let your senior
be left out of his/her senior yearbook. Call for an appointment today.
Call 317-829-2088 after 2 p.m.
There is a $15 sitting fee for those wanting the yearbook pose only.
Please hurry. The December 13 deadline is quickly approaching. Avoid the last-minute rush
On November 9th the Developmental Asset Program for freshmen parents or any parent who might be interested
and missed the first meetings are encouraged to attend at 7:00 PM in the Student life Center Commons
We are still having issues with some cars stopping on the circle for pick-up and delivery of students to and from
school. We are asking that you do not do this as it causes traffic back-ups and has resulted in accidents in past
years.
Janice Gabe, well know social worker, will be at Cathedral in the Commons at 7:00PM on Thursday, Nov. 10 th. Ms.
Gabe will address issues that adolescent parents face today in a frank and compelling manner. Janice will offer practical
suggestions to parents and will answer questions concerning all of the issues that teens today face. It is an evening worth
your time and I strongly suggest that you attend. Janice has spoken many times to parents and her ability to connect and
relate might be of a benefit to you.

Interact Club Book Drive: Last week students were asked to donate gently used books that are
being sent to a township in South Africa (here is the website for where the books are being sent
http://www.sa.christelhouse.org/ ). The students and teachers responded with an outpouring of books
that totaled almost 1500. They were boxed up by members of the Interact Club and the English
Department, as their departmental service project. Thanks go out to all those who donated books and
especially to Katherine Will for getting the project off the ground and spear-heading the entire effort.

New Orleans Trip Reminder:
Students going on the mission trip should bring labeled shovels, metal rakes and hoes, work gloves and boots for work.

County News: On October 18th the “Fitz Bell” honoring Mrs. Barb Fitzgerald, former teacher who
passed away a year and a half ago, was blessed and presented to the school. Students in each
county compete for the honor of winning the bell. Currently the county of Galway is first in the
standings with many events and opportunities to earn points still remaining.
Lunchroom Accounts (effective immediately): At this time, the cafeteria is $1,000 in the negative in student balances.
They are in their 3rd month and need to tighten up accounts. In the future, they are going to send out e-mails
when an account is at $5.00 and now they will be sending emails letting parents know that their child is in the
negative. Once a student is in the negative, they will be able to eat up to 2 Irish meals and then at that point the
system will not let them charge any more until they show a positive balance in their account.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is proud to announce that last week, alongside the White House Office of National
Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), we launched new efforts to raise awareness on the dangers of drugged driving.
While drunk driving remains the primary threat to safety on American roadways, in recent years MADD has become
increasingly worried about the growing trend of poly-abuse (the use of both drugs and alcohol simultaneously) and drugged
7
driving crashes. Today, driving under the influence no longer simply refers to driving drunk, and while the substances being
used may be different, the cost of such actions remain the same - needless deaths and injuries.
According to NHTSA, the data show that the problem, while somewhat hard to define, is a real one:
 Roughly one in eight weekend, nighttime drivers tested positive for illicit drugs.
 In 2009, of the drivers who were killed in motor vehicle crashes (and were subsequently tested
and had results
reported), one in three tested positive for drugs.
 One in ten high school seniors self-reported that in the last two weeks they had driven a car
after using marijuana.
Currently, MADD provides support to those victims and survivors of drugged driving who are referred to, or have reached
out to, us. However, until recently, we have not taken a nationally coordinated effort in seeking out these underserved
individuals. Starting tomorrow, that will change as we make reaching this underserved population an active part of our
outreach efforts.
Additionally, MADD will begin to honor law enforcement officers who are making strides in discovering effective strategies
for recognizing drugged driving in order to raise awareness about this growing threat to American families. Starting this
year, an award, known as the 'MADD Hero Award for Drugged Driving Enforcement,' will be awarded biannually to a law
enforcement agency, individual or group that has made significant contributions toward getting drugged drivers off of the
nation’s roadways.
We thank you for your continued support of our lifesaving mission, and we look forward to working with you as we
strive to save more lives and serve more people.

Phoning for Dollar$ Fall Phonathon:
Parents, please encourage your students to serve Cathedral by joining the phonathon team. Phonathon
has begun, but there are four more nights during which you may volunteer!
What is Phoning for Dollar$? Each fall and spring, just as colleges do, CHS has a phonathon, staffed by
student-callers, to support the Cathedral Fund. This is important work for CHS -- last year’s phonathons raised
$40,000! Diane Szymanski, Director of the Cathedral Fund, directs the phonathon and trains the team. We provide
scripts, calling cards, and plenty of pizza. Calling takes place (under the direction of Advancement staff) from CHS
offices on the phonathon dates below from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
The phonathon supports the Cathedral Fund, (our annual fund) a family of funds for educational expenses,
programs, and initiatives that aren’t fully covered by tuition. Included are: academic/faculty programs, arts,
athletics, campus improvements, service/spirituality, technology, and tuition assistance. The Cathedral Fund
benefits all students by bridging the gap between tuition and the true cost of a CHS education.
Phonathon Dates
4 more evenings – students may work a couple, several or all:
October 27, November 1, 2, 3 - 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. each night in the Advancement Office
How can parents help?
(1) Remind your students of the benefits and encourage them to participate!
(2) And, oh yes…please take the call when a student phones you.
8
We need strong phonathon team members who:
 Will not be shy in phoning alumni, parents, and others to ask for their support.
 Love Cathedral and would enjoy the opportunity to help this important cause.
 Are respectful, friendly, and will take direction from Advancement staff.
 Can give a couple or several evenings (Pizza & snacks provided).
Benefits to team members:
 Service hours!
 Opportunity to win cash prizes & gift cards each night.
 This is really great experience for students, and our alums enjoy connecting with students. It’s fun, it’s
easy, and most importantly, it benefits CHS and all students!
The Phoning for Dollar$ team is being organized now. Students must apply to Mrs. Szymanski at
dszymanski@cathedral-irish.org before showing up to work the phonathon.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you…for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of
power and love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:6-7. We are called to serve others with our brave actions and our love, so
that we may be renewed in our Lord and his kingdom. In the wealth of His treasures, the gift of God’s love is our origin of
holiness. We do learn this in service.
Class Service Projects Class service projects become perfect opportunities for off-season sport groups and families.
Details on all of these class service projects in November are noted below in Service Opportunities. Our freshmen
supported the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Wed, Oct 12 with twelve bulging bags of toys and 750 pairs of socks
for families shopping at the Christmas Store in December; click here for details about the freshman class service project in
this month on November 18th and 19th. Sophomores and juniors have supported Anna’s House and the Cathedral Soup
Kitchen with nourishing meals and gifts of hope and positive morale. These projects will reach out again in November on
Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Anna’s House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM-sophomores) and on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Cathedral Soup
Kitchen (10:30-1:30-juniors). Encourage your students to join us.
NOLA Our fall mission trip to New Orleans represents our fourth trip to the Gulf area to help with post-Katrina reconstruction
and community projects from Oct 26 to Oct 31. We are seeking men and women with construction abilities to join us in this
trip so that we can create forms for copings in Holt Cemetery and perform remodel work in the Lower Ninth Ward. Please
contact Mrs. Halstead with your ability and interest in accompanying us. Our valiant and committed sixty students need
your construction leadership to complete their good work on this trip which offers wonderful outreach in a city riddled with
poverty still needing assistance. Thank you for your generous help in our construction efforts. We are getting quite excited!
Youth Leadership Initiative Board for United Way. Freshman, sophomores or juniors are invited to participate on the
Youth Leadership Initiative Board. Applications are due on November 4 and information about requirements and
responsibilities may be viewed at this United Way link. Contact Meaghan Searight with questions about her involvement in
this board during her junior year.
Service Hours on Power School Normally, service hours may be viewed on Power School. They are
current for all hours received since the start of school. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for
seniors are due December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of
14
2011-12, freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students
will be shown on their fourth quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours
earned after April 1 may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project
basis as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service
performance.

under On Campus/Service Outreach.
Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each
month. The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community
needs.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Athletics:
IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (10-24-11) - "Promoting education-based athletics in Indiana"
Are you a victim of bullying or do you know anyone that is a victim? Hopefully you aren't the culprit.
Bullying should never be tolerated and should be reported to the proper authorities immediately. Whether it occurs
in the classroom, athletic arena, or away from school, it is your duty as a student-athlete to report this to a teacher,
coach, or administrator at your school.
Whether it involves you or someone you know, please don't hesitate to "do the right thing". There is no place for bullying so
take the initiative and refuse to be a part of it.

Meditation: Romans 8:26-30
“The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness.” (Romans 8:26)
If, as St. Paul wrote, “we do not know how to pray as we ought” (Romans 8:26), how can we ever hope to reach
God’s ear? Paul himself gives the answer: The Spirit intercedes for us “with inexpressible groanings …
according to God’s will” (8:26,27). It is the Spirit—the life and power of God active within human hearts—who
can lead us and teach us to pray.
It is no coincidence that Paul’s teaching on prayer comes in the middle of a letter devoted to the power of Jesus’
death and resurrection. As in all other things, Jesus is our model for prayer, and his cross is the source of our
prayer. Just as Jesus put aside his own will, even his own life, and relied fully on his Father’s will, the same
applies to us. Prayer that touches the Father’s heart is prayer that puts aside our own ideas and presuppositions,
so that we can learn to pray in a new and more powerful way.
Do you know that the Spirit of God is within you? Can you trust that many of your desires to love God, pray for
people’s healing and conversion, and offer forgiveness come from God himself through the Spirit inside you?
When Jesus left the world, he sent his Holy Spirit to speak to us and prompt us on a level that far surpasses
human words.
Even when we feel out of touch with the Holy Spirit, that doesn’t mean he has left us. It only means that we
need to reach out to him. Look for ways that he may be prompting you to pray, to worship, and to intercede
beyond what you might normally do on your own. Quiet your mind in prayer and let it rest on a passage from
Scripture. Ask the Spirit to give you a deeper love for God or a knowledge of his love that goes beyond the
power of words to express. Place your trust in the Holy Spirit. He has far more glorious plans for you than you
ever could imagine.
“Holy Spirit, teach me to pray today. Enkindle in my heart a desire that the Father’s will be done in my life and
in the life of your church.”
Blessings,
