Nation Building
 Germany in the early 1800-germen speaking people lived in a host of small states in Prussia Austria and
Germany.

All of these states spoke germen or not unified

When Napoleon invaded he lumped all of these states into 1 area under French control.

This unification made these states closer because is gave them a common enemy which was France
 After Napoleon was defeated the congress of Vienna had to decide what to do what this new germen
unified states.

The congress decided to create the germen confederation it was very weak and was headed by Austria.
Otto Von Bismarck
 Succeed where others failed as a diplomat and kind William the 1 decided to promote him and make
him chancellor in 1862.
 Bismarck’s number one goal was to unify all of the Germen states into one h was going to do this by
using his policy of blood and iron.

Bismarck is from Prussia

Bismarck’s success was due to his strong will and his ability to others he was a master of Real politick.

This is realistic politics based on a tough-minded evaluation of the needs of the state.
 He believed that the ends just defied the means. (You can steal anything doesn’t matter how you got it
at least you have it)

As chancellor Bismarck built up the Prussian military.
 The congress of Prussia refused to fun the military, this did not stop Bismarck he simply stole the
money from other areas, once the military was built up and powerful Bismarck was going to use it.


o 1 Schleswig Holstein
o 2 War with Austria
o 3 Franco Russian war.
German Unification
 Delighted by their victory over France the northern and southern German states decided to unite under
one German confederation.
 In January 1871, They named William I the Kaiser of Germany. This new united Germany Began a
period called Second Reich. (there were a total of three Reich’s)
 Unification had come through blood and iron just like Bismarck had predicted. The country would set
up a constitution but the real power stayed in the hands of the Kaiser. This unified German State would
soon become one of the strongest countries in Europe.
