Course Description: Pre-AP English 2 is designed to prepare students for Advanced Placement English classes and coursework during their 11th and 12th grade years, giving them the opportunity to earn college credit before they finish high school. Requiring a greater academic workload than on-level classes, Pre-AP English demands a higher degree of reading, note-taking, writing, and literary analysis. Students who wish to pursue Pre-AP should be aware that they will be held to this higher standard and will have a significant number of take-home readings and assignments. The expectation for this course is that students will be self-motivated to complete all of their assignments without argument and by their due dates. Pre-AP students will: Increase and refine communication skills Plan, draft and complete written compositions on a regular basis Edit papers for clarity, engaging language, and correct use of conventions and mechanics Produce error-free drafts Practice all forms of writing including: persuasive, expository, opinion, response to literature, reflective, autobiographical, and narrative Read multiple genres from World Literature, including independent readings Recognize, interpret, and analyze poetic and literary elements Learn and practice PSAT and SAT vocabulary words and skills Procedures: Students must enter the classroom in an orderly and respectful manner, placing their bags and backpacks under their seats. Students will have warm-up assignments, usually in the Writing Prompt section of their class notebook, at the beginning of each class. Student warm-ups will be graded as part of the students’ notebook grade as well as participation, and talking during the warm-up may negatively affect the offending students’ grades. All student work should be turned into the designated section of the student’s class notebook or in some cases to the boxes at the back of the room as directed by the instructor. All communication in class must be respectful, whether between students or toward the instructor. During class, students should raise their hands to get the instructor’s attention. When a person is addressing the class, either a teacher or student, all others should listen quietly. Students will be required to take some type of organized notes (for example: Cornell Notes) in this class. All notes should be kept in their Notes section of their class notebook) to be checked periodically for a grade. Every student must follow all rules and guidelines in the C.E. King Student Handbook. In addition, students will follow instructions as given by their instructor and all classroom norms agreed upon and posted in the classroom. Course Outline: Major grades 60%: Essays/Papers In-Class tests Projects Curriculum-Based Assessment (CBA) Daily grades 40%: In-Class Assignments Class Participation Notebook Checks Homework *Changes to above listed course outline may take place at any time Texts that we will read: - Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury - Animal Farm by George Orwell - Othello by William Shakespeare - and student selected Independent Reading Grading Policies: Homework: Assigned homework will be given on a regular basis. Unfinished class work may also result in homework. Students are expected to complete any homework, as it will count toward students’ grades. If any student has extenuating circumstances that make it difficult to complete an assignment, that student should come and see me as soon as possible, and we will discuss his/her options. Late work: Late work will be accepted; however, 10 points will be deducted for every day the assignment is late, up to 3 days. After three days a maximum grade of 70 can be assigned. If the work is late more than 3 days, the work will be corrected, but will not receive a grade. Make-up work: If a student is absent, he/she has the amount of time equal to the number of days absent to make-up the work. (i.e. If a student is absent for two days, then the student has two days to make up the missed work.) Students that are absent for an extended period of time will need to work out a plan with the teacher to make-up work missed. Major Assignments have certain rules for making them up: Missed CBA - Make-up date set by department Missed semester exam- Must have a medical excuse from a physician Missed class tests/quizzes- Must work out a time and date to make up the test. Make-up tests may be different from the test given on the test day. Extra credit: Extra credit may be earned at the discretion of the instructor. Attendance/Tardy Policy In order for a student to receive credit for a course, the student must be present in class a minimum of 90% of the time the class meets each semester. Students must be on time to class. (This means in your seat NOT at the door!) Students who are late to class should have a pass Students who are late will receive a detention PLEASE SIGN AND RETURN THIS PAGE (Both student and parent/guardian) By signing this paper, both student and parent confirm that they have read this syllabus and agree to act according to its guidelines.
