MOSES DELIVERS THE ISRAELITES FROM BONDAGE “Lesson 19: Moses Delivers the Israelites from Bondage,” Primary 6: Old Testament, (1996),81 WHAT AM I DESCRIBING? The Lord blesses his children through it. Moses received it from his father-inlaw, Jethro. It makes eternal families possible. It can be bestowed upon worthy, baptized males, ages twelve and older. It is a great power. Its name begins with the letter p. What is it? THE PRIESTHOOD… WHAT IS IT? It is the authority and power of God, which He gives to men so that they can act for Him. We will learn more in this lesson about how Moses used the priesthood to deliver the Israelites out of bondage. A Pharaoh came to power about 400 years after Joseph’s death who opposed the Israelites and enslaved them. Moses fled Egypt to Midian. He married Zipporah, the oldest daughter of Jethro. Moses received the priesthood from his fatherin-law, Jethro Moses was tending sheep near Mount Horeb (Sinai) and saw a bush that appeared to burn but was not destroyed. Jesus Christ called Moses by name from the burning bush. Jesus knew that the Israelites were not happy. He did not want them to be slaves. Jesus told Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt to the promised land. Moses thought he could not lead the Israelites. Jesus said Aaron could help Moses. Aaron was Moses’ older brother. Moses was a prophet of God. Moses and Aaron went to the king of Egypt. They asked him to let the Israelites leave Egypt. When Moses and Aaron asked Pharaoh to let the Israelites worship in the desert for three days, how do you think Pharaoh responded? Let’s read Exodus 5:2 What extra burdens did he put on the Israelites? Let’s read Exodus 5:6–9 What was the first miracle that Moses and Aaron performed before Pharaoh? Let’s read Exodus 7:10 By what power was this miracle performed? By what power were the magicians able to imitate this miracle? Let’s read Exodus 7:11–12 Why was Aaron’s serpent able to swallow the magicians’ serpents? The power of the priesthood is far greater than any other power. The Pharaoh refused Moses’ request to set the Israelites free. Let’s read Exodus 5 The Lord commanded Moses to use the priesthood to call down plagues upon the Egyptians, but still Pharaoh refused to set the Israelites free. Let’s read Exodus 7:20–21; 8:6, 17, 24; 9:6, 10, 23; 10:14–15, 22; 11:5 Jesus said he would help Moses and Aaron. Jesus would show the king of Egypt his power. Then the king would let the Israelites go. When the Lord told Moses to go to Pharaoh and again ask him to let the people go, Moses felt inadequate. How did the Lord help Moses fulfill this calling? Let’s read Exodus 7:1–2 Note the clarification of the Joseph Smith Translation in footnotes 1b and 1c reads: “I have made thee a prophet … and Aaron thy brother shall be thy spokesman.” How did Pharaoh respond to this request? Let’s read Exodus 7:3 Pharaoh hardened his heart. Moses told the king Jesus would change the water in the rivers to blood. The people could not drink the water. The fish died. Again Moses asked the king to let the Israelites go. But the king would not let them go. Jesus sent many frogs to Egypt. The frogs were everywhere. They were in the homes and the beds of the people. The king said he would let the Israelites go if the frogs went away. Jesus made the frogs die. But the king had lied and would not let the Israelites go. Jesus made lice come everywhere. But the king still would not let the Israelites go. Jesus made flies come everywhere to the Egyptians. The king told Moses that he would let the Israelites go if the flies went away. The flies went away. But the king had lied again. He would not let them go. Moses said that Jesus would make the Egyptians’ animals die. Soon their animals died. But the king still would not let the Israelites go. Jesus put bad sores on the Egyptians. Then Jesus sent a bad hailstorm. The storm killed everyone who was outside. The king said that he would let the Israelites go. Moses prayed, and the storm stopped. But the king would not let them go. Jesus sent locusts who ate all of the fruit and green plants. Still the king would not let the Israelites go. Jesus sent darkness for three days. The Egyptians could not see anything. The king of Egypt still would not let the Israelites go. Jesus told Moses a sickness would come. The oldest child in every Egyptian family would die. Even the king’s oldest son would die. Jesus told Moses how to save the Israelite children. He said each Israelite father should get a lamb that had nothing wrong with it. Moses told the Israelites to kill the lambs. They obeyed him. They put the lambs’ blood on their doors. The sickness would pass over the houses with blood on their doors. The Israelites cooked the lamb meat and ate it. They stayed in their houses. That night the oldest child of each Egyptian family died. Even the king’s oldest son died. The sickness passed over the houses with blood on the door. Jesus called this the Passover. He told the Israelites to remember the Passover. He said they should have a Passover dinner every year. They should remember that Jesus saved their children. Everyone in the class, please stand. Sit down if you are the oldest child in your family. If those of you who are sitting had been in Egyptian families at the time of Moses, you would have been killed in the tenth plague. Everyone in the class may sit. Enrichment Activity #2 All of the children in the Israelite families who put the blood of a lamb on their door posts were safe. They were passed over by the destroying angel. Every year the Israelites observed the Feast of the Passover in remembrance of the time when the destroying angel passed over them and they were delivered from bondage. Enrichment Activity #2 When Jesus lived on the earth, he and his family celebrated the Feast of the Passover Let’s read Luke 2:41 & 22:7–8 A lamb without blemish was killed for the feast. The lamb represented the Lamb of God, or Jesus Christ, who died to save us. Enrichment Activity #2 After the Crucifixion, the disciples partook of the sacrament, which Christ instituted at the Last Supper, instead of the Feast of the Passover. Enrichment Activity #2 The king was afraid everyone in Egypt would die. He told Moses and Aaron to take the Israelites and leave Egypt. The Israelites left Egypt. Moses led them. Jesus showed Moses where to go. What were the ten plagues the Lord commanded Moses to call down upon Egypt because Pharaoh refused to let Israel go? (1) Exodus 7:20–21, river turns to blood (2) Exodus 8:6, frogs (3) Exodus 8:17, lice (4) Exodus 8:24, flies (5) Exodus 9:6, cattle die What were the ten plagues the Lord commanded Moses to call down upon Egypt because Pharaoh refused to let Israel go? (6) Exodus 9:10, sores (7) Exodus 9:23, hail and fire (8) Exodus 10:14–15, locusts (9) Exodus 10:22, darkness (10) Exodus 11:5, death of firstborn WHAT IS IN THE BAG? You each will get to take a slip of paper from the bag. Each slip of paper has a number and a scripture references for each of the ten plagues. Enrichment Activity #1 Look up your reference and draw a picture of the plague it is about. When everyone is done each of you can show your picture and tell about the plague on it. Enrichment Activity #1 What pattern did Pharaoh follow with each plague? Let’s read Exodus 8:8, 13, 15 After the first two miracles the magicians could no longer imitate the plagues. What did the magicians recognize? Let’s read Exodus 8:18–19 What effect may signs and miracles have on our faith? Let’s read D&C 63:9 Miracles and signs will not give us a testimony. After we have done our part to gain a testimony, we are sometimes blessed with signs or miracles that strengthen our faith. On the tenth plague, how did the destroying angel know to pass over the homes of the Israelites? Let’s read Exodus 12:21–23 How were the Israelites blessed by obeying the prophet Moses? Why should we be obedient to our Church leaders? How many people did Moses lead out of the land of Egypt? Let’s read Exodus 12:37 Note: the scripture refers to the number of men. There were also women and children in addition to the 600,000 men. How go? did they know which way to Let’s read Exodus 13:21 The king of Egypt still wanted the Israelites for slaves. He took his army and chased them. The Israelites came to the Red Sea. They saw the Egyptian army coming. The Israelites were afraid. They thought they would be killed. They would rather be slaves than be killed. Moses told them not to be afraid. He said Jesus would help them. Jesus told Moses to raise his hand over the sea. A strong wind divided the sea. It was a miracle. It showed the Israelites God’s power. Jesus stopped the Egyptians. How did the children of Israel react when they saw that all the chariots of Egypt were pursuing them? Let’s read Exodus 14:10–12 How should we act when challenges come into our lives? How did Moses respond to the people as the chariots approached? Let’s read Exodus 14:13–14 How did the Lord protect them? Let’s read Exodus 14:19–20 When the children of Israel finally escaped from Egypt, Moses used the power of the priesthood again to save his people from Pharaoh’s armies, who tried to recapture them. Let’s read Exodus 13:3, 21–22; 14:5– 31 The Israelites walked across on dry ground. Then the Egyptians went after them. The Israelites were safe on the other side. Jesus told Moses to raise his hand over the sea again. The sea covered the Egyptians. They were killed. How did the Israelites cross the Red Sea? Let’s read Exodus 14:16, 21–22 By what power was Moses able to control the water? What happened to the Egyptians? Let’s read Exodus 14:26–31 How did this miracle partially fulfill a promise Moses received earlier in his life? Let’s read Moses 1:25–26 How have you been blessed by the power of the priesthood in your life? Now the Israelites were free. They sang songs and danced and thanked God. They would always remember the Passover. They would always remember that Jesus led them out of Egypt. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. Enrichment Activity #3 It is important to prepare receive the Aaronic Priesthood. What are the duties of a deacon? Enrichment Activity #4 A boy who has been baptized and confirmed a member of the Church and is worthy may be ordained to the office of deacon when he is twelve years old. Enrichment Activity #4 The deacons are usually assigned to pass the sacrament to members of the Church, act as ushers, keep Church buildings and grounds in good order, act as messengers for priesthood leaders, and fulfill special assignments such as collecting fast offerings. Enrichment Activity #4 Is it important to keep the commandments to be worthy of this responsibility? I encourage all of you future deacons to respect and honor the priesthood throughout your lives and use it to serve the Lord. Enrichment Activity #4 1. I see my mother kneeling with our family each day. I hear the words she whispers as she bows her head to pray. Her plea to the Father quiets all my fears, And I am thankful love is spoken here. 2. Mine is a home where ev’ry hour is blessed by the strength of priesthood pow’r, With father and mother leading the way, Teaching me how to trust and obey; And the things they teach are crystal clear, For love is spoken here. [3rd ending] I can often feel the Savior near When love is spoken here. Words and music: Janice Kapp Perry, b. 1938 © 1980 by Janice Kapp Perry. I am grateful that the priesthood has been restored to the earth again. I have seen the power of the priesthood used to act in God’s name here on earth and know it is a great blessing to have in our lives.
