Nolan McCarthy Period 5 9/12/10 Ancient Civilization Essay The Exodus movement was a climax of the religion Judaism and I would choose to be a Hebrew in this time period because of the events that occurred. The Exodus was a time in which the Israelites were freed from Egypt. Moses was believed to be an Israelite but was raised in a pharaoh’s palace. Moses had received a message from god telling him to take the Israelites from Egypt and march them into a new land, Canaan. The pharaoh was not in favor of this, but after a series of plagues, he had no choice. After the Exodus, Moses led the Israelites through the deserts for years and eventually came to a mountain called Sinai. On that mountain, it is said by the Torah that God gave Moses two stone tablets in which to write the 10 Commandments on. After 40 years of wandering through the desert, the Israelites came to a land called Canaan. They believed that God promised them this land and was said to be “flowing with milk and honey”. Other people had inhabited the land of Canaan but the Israelites won the land over, in the time of several decades. Thus, the land became known as Israel. Every now then there were prophets that had the job of communicating the word of God to the people of Israel to keep them focused on there faith. This was important because otherwise, the people would be left with many unanswered questions and the religion would die out. Although it was not mentioned in the book, this was also the time when Moses parted the red sea so that he and the Israelites could get to Canaan. And overall, I would want to be a Hebrew because I would like to witness all of the events leading up to the rule of Israel.
