GEOMETRY
COURSE OUTLINE AND EXPECTATIONS, 2015-16

COURSE OBJECTIVES: (In line with school-wide expected learning results (ESLR’s):
1) To provide a foundation in concepts of deductive reasoning and proofs; congruence, similarity,
right triangles, circles, inequalities, areas, volumes, linear equations, trigonometry.
2) Development of an independent thinker, yet one who can also collaborate well with others, who
is persistent and dedicated to self-improvement.
3) Development of expressing mathematical ideas verbally, in writing, and when appropriate,
supported by technology.
4) Development of time management skills, personal responsibility, and personal integrity.
CLASS MATERIALS: Textbook, pencils/paper, binder or notebook for notetaking, a set of dry-erase
markers, an eraser (or small cloth to erase), TI-84 graphing calculator, red pen. Personal devices will
be optional, and only allowed with pre-authorization from teacher. The school’s devices may be used
occasionally for mini pop quizzes while in class.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1) Class notes: Take notes daily of all presentations in class.
2) Home study: Review class lessons at home and study examples in book.
3) Daily written homework: Labeled neatly with name, date, and chapter/section. Show all work;
no credit if no work is shown. Assignments will be spot checked daily and corrected completely
on weekly basis. Assignments will be posted on whiteboard in classroom.
4) Quizzes: All are POP QUIZZES, and are NOT extremely detailed. This process is primarily a
means to check that homework is being done on a daily basis. Quizzes usually only include 3 or
4 basic problems.
5) Tests: Given at conclusion of each chapter.
6) Semester Final exams are weighted as two Chapter tests.
ABSENCE POLICY:
1) Normally, quizzes cannot be made up. Tests should be made up within 2 days of student’s
return to school.
2) Homework assignments should be completed nightly, but must be completed by date of weekly
correction day, which will be announced in class and posted on whiteboard in classroom.
3) Students with planned absences must make arrangements for make up work AHEAD OF TIME.
Students with unplanned absences must contact the teacher the day the student returns to
class. The nature of the assignment and/or nature of the absence will determine whether or not
the missed work may be made up.
4) Excessive absence: If a student misses more than 10 days during a semester, she may not
receive credit for this course.
Computer Acceptable Use Policy: Students are expected to know and follow the school
policies on acceptable use of the computers and the network. Violations are not acceptable.
Academic integrity: You are expected to follow school policies on cheating or plagiarism.
Basically, work you present as your own must be work you have actually done. Academic
dishonesty is unacceptable and I will respond by following school policy.
GRADING POLICY:
Tests (Semester Exams count as 2 Chapter Tests): 50%
Quizzes:
30%
Homework/Participation:
20%
Final semester letter grade will be determined by the weight value listed above and the school-wide
grading scale (School Agenda ’15-‘16, p. 10).
EXTRA HELP:
1) Use textbook answers as resource. All odd answers are in back of book.
2) Hotmath.com This online service is provided by Ramona, at no cost to the student. Select your
textbook, password is “rcss” and the solutions will be shown to you, step by step, and in detail.
3) Seek help from and discuss challenging material with other classmates.
4) Tutoring available, every Monday/Wed after school, and/or by pre-arrangement with teacher.
5) Do NOT wait until it’s too late; if you’re struggling in this class, ask for help right away.
NEXT MATH CLASS:
If you earn a C or better in both semesters of this class, you will be eligible for Algebra II next year.
