N E W S L E T T E R Ms. Campbell Ms. Holt Monday, September 17, 2012 Anchorage Public School Spelling This week’s spelling and vocabulary words are taken out of the orange “Vocabulary from Classical Roots” workbook lesson 2. Words Motel Motionless Motivate Motive Motor Numerator Numerical Numerous Challenge Words Motivation Motorist Promote Promotion Remote Enumerate innumerable Ms. Harper Reading/Language/Writing Students will continue reading for informational text using the story “The Night of the Pufflings.” Vocabulary from the story are: uninhabited, burrows, stranded, venture, instinctively, nestles. Students will take a test on Friday for comprehension of the story and its vocabulary. This week in language students will continue recognizing and writing simple and compound sentences. Math This week math will be all about adding & subtracting. We will be reviewing the traditional algorithms and then practicing with real world problems. We will be delving into some multi-step problems that involve more than one operation. We will learn how to set these problems up with a variable assigned for the unknown. Thursday we will take a retest of the material from our last quiz to see how much progress we have made in mastering these learning targets. Science This week students will continue their studies of adaptations. On Monday, students will do a bird beak lab to determine the best beak adaptations for eating certain foods. On Tuesday, students will study defense adaptations, specifically camouflage vs. mimicry. Social Studies This week students will continue learning about how landforms such as rivers and mountains influence where human activities are located in Kentucky. Also, we will explore why the "Bluegrass State- Kentucky" can also be known as the "River State." We'll examine the 89,431 miles of rivers and streams in Kentucky and see how these waterways provide recreational activities and countless economic opportunities. Upcoming Dates: 1. Field Experience at the Louisville Zoo- Information and permission slips went home last Monday in the weekly folder. Permission slips were due Friday, September 14th and field trip money is due by Friday, September 28th. Please send in the permission slips as soon as possible so we can turn in our lunch counts to the cafeteria. Thank you.
