EV 301 – Evangelism Methods and Practices Spring 2015 Syllabus Bro. Bryan Samms I. Course Description This course is designed to be the most practical class for the Evangelism major. Through our lectures, we will cover some important aspects of the life of the Evangelist, such as handling financing, scheduling meetings, and his relationship with local church Pastors and their congregations. II. Course Objectives The student who successfully completes this course will be able to: 1 2 3 4 5 Understand how an evangelist gets started into the ministry Understand the relationship between an evangelist and his home church. Understand how to operate the finances of an evangelistic ministry Understand the scheduling dynamics of the evangelist. Decide the best type of traveling scenario for an evangelist and family. III. Lecture notes for this course must be purchased in the college bookstore and brought to each class session. 2. If a student misses a class for any reason, it is the responsibility of the student to get the notes from another student or the instructor. 3. Quizzes and tests will be given over the lectured material. Quizzes may or may not be announced. All tests, the mid-term exam, and final exam will be announced in advance. 1 4. Projects: a. Essay #1 – (Due Monday, February 9th) Choose an evangelist from the past and describe what, in your opinion, made him effective in his preaching and ministry. This paper should be a minimum of 500 words and must cite at least two sources. b. Essay #2 – (Due Monday, March 30th) A 750 word (minimum) paper that should include the following: 1. A biblical description of the gift of the evangelist (please use Scripture references). 2. A philosophy of the evangelist's relationship with his home church and pastor (finances, accountability). 3. A description of the responsibilities that an evangelist has during a week of meetings (to the host pastor, congregation, other responsibilities). c. Essay #3 – (Due Monday, April 13th) Describe your plans traveling as an evangelist. Will you travel alone or with your family? What are the dangers and benefits of both? What method of transportation do you plan to use (driving, flying, RV)? This paper should be at least 500 words. 5. Tests: a. Verse Test (Monday, March 16th) Ephesians 4:11-12; 2 Timothy 4:5; Acts 21:8; Acts 8:4-5; Acts 16:10 b. Midterm: (Monday, March 23rd) c. Final Exam (TBA – according to college final exam schedule) IV. V. Course Grading Factors 1. Tests – 45% 2. Quizzes – 30% 3. Projects – 25% 4. No late work will be accepted. Spiritual and Academic Integrity Attendance Policy: Students may not miss more than fifteen (15) percent of the class meetings. It is your responsibility to keep up with your attendance on the portal. You will be notified by my office when you have missed ten (10) percent. You will be automatically dropped from the class at fifteen (15) percent. Only the academic office can help you if you reach the fifteen (15) percent mark. 2 Academic Honesty: Cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and any act designed to give an unfair advantage to the student (such as, but not limited to, submitting the same written assignment for two courses or providing false or misleading information in an effort to receive a postponement or an extension on a test, quiz, exam, or other assignment) is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. Cheating is lying. It dishonors God. Don’t do it. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work.” Please do your own work. There are no short cuts to a successful life and ministry. Do the work. Laziness and lack of character will catch up with you somewhere. Another author’s specific words must be placed within quotation marks with an appropriate reference given. Another author’s ideas must include an appropriate reference. VI.
