Important Landmarks for tourists
1. Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool (Awarded a certificate of Excellence)
 Address: Wailoko Rd | Sabeto, Nadi, Viti Levu 10944, Nadi Airport, Fiji

Variously known as the Sabeto Hot Springs or Sabeto Mud Baths, this activity is one
way to immerse yourself into the Fijian way of life! Located halfway between the
major cities of Nadi and Lautoka on the main island of Viti Levu, the Fijian mud baths
are a must-do holiday experience.

. The site has basic changing and toilet facilities and is a little out of the way, but
worth the effort. You'll receive a guided tour of the area before you get to immerse
yourself in warm mud.

The social experience of getting dirty with locals and other travellers is quite
levelling, and given the rise of Fiji as a destination for nuptials, the mud baths are
also a popular and unique pampering ritual to share with a wedding party.
1. Garden of the Sleeping Giant

The Garden of the Sleeping Giant sits at the foothills of the Nausori Highlands
about 10 minutes drive north of Nadi. The attractive landscaped gardens
specialize in Fiji’s native plants as well as housing an impressive collection of
orchids, some native. A jungle walk takes visitors past a large lily pond and
through native forest.

Located about half an hour from Nadi, The Garden of Sleeping Giant is a
beautiful orchid range started in 1977 by the late Raymond Burr, star of Perry
Mason and Ironside.

The gardens showcase more than two thousand different kinds of orchids,
covering 20 hectares. For an entry fee of just $10, you can wander through the
lush and fertile plantation to your heart’s content. Right next door is Raymond
Burr’s holiday shack, which is also open to visitors.

The shack still contains a few items that belonged to the superstar, including
photographs, his favorite chair and even his walking cane. It costs about $8 to
see the house, and the entry price includes a delightful afternoon tea.

Whether you are into gardens or not, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant is sure to
take your breath away. The exquisite beauty of the garden is unsurpassed by
most, housing one of the world’s largest orchid collections plus beautiful
cultivated greenery and enchanting lily ponds, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant
is not to be missed. Take a picnic and enjoy the peace and serenity of some of
2
the most stunning gardens on earth. The gardens are open Monday to Saturdays
– 9 am to 5 pm.
2. Naval Village

Visit the last authentic traditional Fijian village deep into Fiji's interior mountain
landscape. Partake in the tradional welcome kava ceremony, tour the village, school,
mingle with the villagers and cool off in the fresh water river of Navala.

Navala is a 200 year old, picturesque village built in the old ways, preserving the
traditional native ‘bure’ or thatched hut; Navala is home to roughly 1000 people.

Once at the village, you will be welcomed in the traditional way with a kava
ceremony. You will then be taken on a guided tour of the village, the village school,
mingle with the locals and hear old legends and stories of this beautiful, ancient
village.

This will be the perfect time to take pictures with the locals and the beautifully
preserved homes they live in. You can then take a dip in the cool waters of the
nearby river then lunch at the village.

You will also witness various activities such as coconut tree climbing and also sample
the cool coconut juice from a freshly picked coconut.
3. Diving and Snorkeling
 Fiji is known as the “Soft Coral Capital of the World” and is also home to the “Great
Astrolabe Reef”. A network of brilliant coral reefs surrounds our 333islands and
atolls. With around 1000 species of fish and several hundred types of coral and
sponges, Fiji offers a unique diving experience. With over 4000 square miles of coral
reef, Fiji Islands offer divers unparalleled marine biodiversity.

If you feel like going beyond the beautiful reef dives venture into reef passages and
come face to face with Grey Reef sharks, Silvertips, Hammerheads and White Tips.

If you’d like to get to know them a bit better and at closer range, expect an adrenalin
rush from what is known as the ‘Best shark dive in the world’ as you dive with the
sharks observing experienced Fijian divers carry out the famous ‘shark feeding.

If you’re looking for an amazing experience at a slightly slower pace, you can swim
with the giant Manta Rays. Between May and October these elegant creatures bless
the waters off Manta Ray Island with a visit, MantaRays are one of the largest fish in
the ocean, some span as big as 6.5metres.
3

Fiji is also home to five species of turtles, the most famous being the Hawksbill
Turtle, which are now protected species. Many of the resorts now have conservation
programs to look after these precious locals. Our moderate water temperature
makes for year-round diving and the visibility is a photographers dream.
5. Ice Bar

Ice Bar is based in Nadi, Fiji – close to the International Airport and a range of Hotels
and Accommodation. Ice Bar provides an ideal platform for locals and visitors to the
Fiji Islands when it comes to night life.

who need a safe sober ride home after a good night out. Also provide safety as well
as security for the customers as this is one of Their main priorities.
6. Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple
 At the base of Main St, away from Nadi’s boisterous main drag, this peaceful Hindu
temple is one of the few places outside India where you can see traditional Dravidian
architecture. The whole place is painted in colours bright enough to make your eyes
ache and looks fantastic against cloudless, blue skies. The wooden carvings of Hindu
deities travelled all the way from India, as did the artists who dressed the temple in its
colourful coat and impressive ceiling frescos. New murals are still being commissioned
and it’s quite possible that you’ll see resident artist ST Santosh lying, Michelangelo-style,
on scaffolding as he paints the temple’s ceilings.

Nadi’s festivals, such as Karthingai Puja (held monthly), Panguni Uthiram Thiru-naal (in
April) and Thai Pusam (January), attract worshippers from around the world. Devotees
circle the temple where they offer banana, smash a coconut, burn some camphor and
receive blessing from the priest. Some of these festivals last several days and it’s worth
attending if they coincide with your plans.
4

Visitors are welcome as long as they wear neat and modest dress and remove their
shoes at the temple entrance. It is fine to take photos in the grounds but not inside the
temple. Non-Hindus are asked not to enter the inner sanctum, which is reserved for
devotees bringing offerings.
7. Port Denerau









This charming port area is a hub for charter tours, relaxing resorts, cultural
performances and adventures to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands.
Port Denarau, a busy marina and gateway to the stunning Mamanuca and Yasawa
islands. The port features a scenic marina and fantastic opportunities for shopping,
dining and experiencing the local culture. The marina is the heart of Denarau Island, an
extensive resort area built up from the mangrove wetlands northwest of Viti Levu. With
its connections by land, sea and air, Port Denarau is a great place to base your trip on
Fiji’s main islands.
Stroll around the waterfront to see the different yachts and cruise ships moored at the
marina. Begin a boating adventure here and book a sailing tour around the Mamanuca
and Yasawa islands.
Join a snorkelling or scuba diving trip departing from the port and experience the
stunning sights of tropical fish and coral reefs. Four-wheel-drive tours and helicopter
rides are also available for exploring the secluded villages and stunning landscapes on
Viti Levu and beyond.
The port’s mall area offers a range of shopping destinations, from fashion boutiques and
beachwear shops to local craft stores. Grab a snack from the bakeries and ice cream
stalls, or try authentic Fijian cuisine and contemporary Asian fare at the mall’s
restaurants.
Sample fragrant curries with sweet potato, taro or cassava or try fresh Japanese-style
tuna steak and locally caught seafood marinated in lime and coconut.
Catch an exciting cultural event at the waterfront amphitheatre or at select resorts.
Experience traditional Fijian and Indian music performances and watch the dancers and
festivities.
Cooking demonstrations, art exhibitions and festivals taking place at the port. Attend
the annual Jazz and Blues Festival or the South Pacific Food and Wine Festival.
Denarau Island resorts and an inter-resort shuttle service is also available. Parking can
be found at the port for a small fee. The shopping mall is open daily, but individual
stores and events may have differing opening times.

Shopping, Clothing and Handicraft

Visit Jack's of Fiji (Fiji's largest merchant), Prouds, and Tappoo, all of which have
branches on the Queen's Road in Nadi Town, at Port Denarau, and the shopping
arcades of the larger hotels.

In Nadi Town, the upstairs rooms of Jack's of Fiji are filled with clothing and leather
goods. Tappoo carries a broad range of merchandise, including electronics, cameras,
and sporting goods. Prouds concentrates on perfumes, watches, and jewelry including
Fiji's own J. Hunter black pearls.

In addition to being the shove-off point for cruises and transfers to the islands, Port
Denarau is the shopping mecca on Denarau Island. This modern mall has a Jack's of Fiji
branch, a surf shop, two banks and a FourEx currency exchange, a grocery and wine
store, an ice-cream parlor, and several restaurants.
"Duty-Free" Shopping

Fiji has the most developed shopping industry in the South Pacific, as will be very
obvious when you walk along the main thoroughfare in Nadi Town. The Fiji government
charges an import tax on merchandise brought into the country; so, despite their claims
to the contrary, the stores aren't "duty-free." I have found much better prices and
selections on the Internet and at large-volume dealers such as Best Buy and Circuit City
in the United States, so shop around at home first so that you can compare the prices in
Fiji. Also the models offered in the duty-free shops here are seldom the latest editions.

You should have no problems buying watches, cameras, and electronic gear from large
merchants such as Prouds and Tappoo, but get receipts that accurately describe your
purchases from small stores.

You can pay for your duty-free purchases by credit card. That way, if something goes
wrong after you're back home, you can solicit help from the financial institution that
issued the card.

If you missed anything, you'll get one last chance at the huge shops in the departure
lounge at Nadi Airport.
Handicrafts

Fijians produce a wide variety of handicrafts, such as carved tanoa (kava) bowls, war
clubs, and cannibal forks; woven baskets and mats; pottery (which has seen a
renaissance of late); and masi (tapa) cloth. Although generally not of the quality of those
produced in Tonga, they are made in prolific quantities.

The larger shops sell some very fine face masks and nguzunguzus (pronounced noo-zoonoo-zoos), the inlaid canoe prows carved in the Solomon Islands, and some primitive art
from Papua New Guinea.
6

The largest and best-stocked shop on Queen's Road is Jack's of Fiji (tel. 670 0744). It has
a wide selection of handicrafts, jewelry, T-shirts, clothing, and paintings by local artists.
The prices are reasonable and the staff is helpful rather than pushy. The Chefs The
Restaurant complex is on premises. Jack's of Fiji has other outlets including the shopping
arcade of the Sheraton Fiji Resort (tel. 670 1777), at the Tokatoka Resort Hotel (tel. 672
0400).

Other places to look are Nadi Handicraft Center (tel. 670 2357) and Nad's
Handicrafts (tel. 670 3588). Nadi Handicraft Center has an upstairs room carrying
clothing, leather goods, jewelry, and black pearls. Nad's usually has a good selection of
Fijian pottery. Nadi Handicraft Market is a collection of stalls on the Queen's Road near
the south end of Nadi Town. The best are operated by Fijian women who sell baskets
and other goods woven of pandanus, a palm whose supple leaves are more durable
than those of the coconut tree.
Tropical Clothing

You'll have innumerable choices of tropical clothing here, but for the most unusual
items in the entire South Pacific, head out to Michoutouchkine Creations at the
Sheraton Fiji (tel. 675 0518). This little shop carries the colorful creations of Nicolai
Michoutouchkine and Aloi Pilioki, two noted Vanuatu artists whose unique squiggly
swirls and swooshes distinguish each of their shirts, blouses, pant suits, and beach
towels.

said.

There was a need of a place for spiritual culture to meditate in the world where there is
so much tension, frustration, depression and people struggling at a mental and
