A R C H I T E C T S P A C I F I C 2004 Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Suva, Fiji Islands The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre was an AusAid sponsored project to develop a new centre and temporary shelter for women and children victims and survivors of domestic violence. The building sits on an awkward sloping trapezoidal urban corner in central Suva. Above: Natural timber cladding breaks up the facade and softens the building, which is on a busy corner. Large roof over hangs and louvre shading devices help shade the building from the tropical sun. Lilac, the FWCC symbolic colour representing peace and tranquility, was used on the exterior to express the identity of the building. The safe haven provided by the centre is reinforced by the restricted visitor entry to the first floor, via a long pedestrian bridge. The facilities accommodate FWCC’s work in public advocacy and community education programmes. In 2008 the building won the Main Award for the best building as judged by the Fiji Association of Architects. Right: Evening light shows the large overhanging eaves which provide shade and shelter the facade from rain. The entry bridge strengthens the sense of safety within. Uplighting adds to the elegance of the building. Generous windows provide natural interior light. Client AusAID Awards Fiji Association of Architects, Main Award, 2008 Link http://www.fijiwomen.com/
