Taxes & Gold

 Bought goods and left
 Their city was conquered by Ghana’s
army
 They lived in Ghana
The money that was collected was used to
support Ghana’s army.
However, Ghana didn’t earn money just
from taxes, or from owning most of
the West African trade routes, they
also had huge gold mines that gave
lots of gold.
Some uses for gold included:
 Trading
 Money
Even though Ghana was in
possession of so much gold,
only rulers could own gold
nuggets were worth more than
gold dust. The people of Ghana
used gold dust as money.
Expansion of the Empire
Ghana’s money was
used to support their army,
making it very powerful. This
powerful army conquered
many nearby lands.
However, Ghana’s rulers
were afraid that to much
land would be to hard to
control. So, the conquered
rulers were still allowed to
rule and acted as the “ Kings
Governors”.
*Under the rule
of Tunka Manin,
Ghana reached its
height. The royal court
reflected the wealth of
the Ghana Empire.
