Pelahatchie High School Lesson Plan Template 2015-2016 Teacher’s Name: Amanda Marbury Unit Title: The Cell Cycle Reading Strategies: - Students will be reading a scientific article and finding the main ideas and important information. - Students will read a packet on mitosis and answer analysis questions to introduce the topic. - Students will read quiz questions and analyze. - Students will perform a web quest on meiosis to introduce the topic. Writing Strategies: - Students will have to write a paragraph explaining the author’s main idea, purpose, and audience for the article we are reading. - Students will perform several quick writes to summarize topics or to get them interested and thinking about a topic. - Students will draw and describe the stages of mitosis. - Students will write down their observations on a graph of cancer death rates and write their conclusions. - Students will have a silent conversation about different types of twins and how it could possibly occur. Subject/Course: Physical Science MS Framework Objective(s): 4b Grade Level: 9 -12 Common Core Framework Objective(s): RST.9-10.7 RST.9-10.10 WHST.9-10.2 WHST.9-10.6 Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to… 10/19: Identify the purpose of mitosis Identify the stages of mitosis 10/20: Identify the purpose of mitosis Identify the stages of mitosis 10/21: Identify the cause of cancer Identify how mitosis relates to cancer 10/22: Identify the importance of mitosis Identify purpose of meiosis 10/23: Identify the purpose of meiosis Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis Flipped Classroom Method (Optional) Explain how instruction will occur at home. This will help the students know why and how cells divide and how this process can lead to cancer. Pre/work or bell ringer? Students will write a summary of the article Daily Activities (include reading and writing activities): - The students will look at a graph showing different rates of death from cancer. They will write down their observations. They will then use the GOGOMO activity (get one, give one, and move on). - The teacher will then cold call and ask students what they observed from the graph. - The teacher will lecture on cancer. - The students will perform a quick write and answer: how do you think we can prevent cancer? What do you think would be a way to treat/cure cancer? - The students will complete a review sheet on mitosis How will this lesson connect to the next day’s lesson? This will help review students for their quiz next class. Pre/work or bell ringer? Study for quiz Daily Activities (include reading and writing activities): - The students will take a quiz on mitosis and the cell cycle. - The students will complete a webquest on meiosis. How will this lesson connect to the next day’s lesson? This will introduce the topic of meiosis to the students. The students will take a quiz over the article they have been reading Daily Activities (include reading and writing activities): - The students perform a silent conversation. Each student will get a picture of a different set of twins and write down their observations. They will have two minutes and then pass it to the next person. After they have seen all of the pictures, they will then write down their conclusions. - The teacher will cold call on students and lead a discussion to introduce meiosis. - The teacher will write vocab words on the board and students will fill out a worksheet noting which words they know, think they know, or have no idea. - The teacher will then lecture on meiosis - The class will have a discussion about the twins in the silent discussion. How will this lesson connect to the next day’s lesson? This will get the students interested in the topic of meiosis for next class.
