A motion was made to approve $300 for now. It was seconded and the motion carried. Scholars 2 Scholars (S2S) – This program helps new students that transfer in mid-year to PLHS. Discussion has led by Laurie Hurl that transfers are from all areas not just the military. The motion was seconded and the motion carried. C) PA Website Update – Kim Jessop The PA website update is in process. HISTORY DEPARTMENT REQUEST January 24, 2010 Point Loma High School Pointer Association This is the fifth year we at Point Loma High have created and sponsored a tradition of rewarding excellence in the academic field of history. Our end of year award ceremony and banquet celebration is scheduled for June 9, 6:00-8:00 pm at the Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island. We honor approximately 200 of our most outstanding history students and their families at this banquet. 9th 10th 11th and 12th grade students are given awards. Each student who attends will receive a Cross Pen, a certificate of achievement, and some will receive monetary scholarships for their outstanding work while studying history at Point Loma High. Last year both the Point Loma High PTSA and the Alumni Association donated $700 dollars each to our program. This year we are experiencing a deficit in fund raising but we are committed to following through with our program. Our goal this year is to raise $5000 for scholarships and supporting needy students for the cost of dinner. I am hopeful that we can obtain support for some of this amount from the new Pointer Association as well as a corporate sponsor. Our fund raising and recognition of students is ongoing and we welcome all donations. Please contact Mr. McElhaney if you can assist us in this endeavor to recognize students for their academic achievement in history. (pmcelhaney@sandi.net) Thank you for your support of History Education at PLHS. NJROTC Request $650 - $500.00 IS NEEDED FOR THE UNIT AWARDS BANQUET AND $150.00 IS REQUIRED TO COVER THE COST OF AWARDS AND THE ENGRAVING OF THE PERPETUAL AWARDS. Beneficiaries (who and how many)? 72 Students and 50 family members Matching funds available? None 6 FUNDS WERE PROVIDED LAST YEAR AND ARE REQUIRED EACH YEAR 3. JENNIFER ROBERT'S REQUEST $1800-$200 Description of proposal: I would like to purchase replacement batteries for the 38 laptops currently in use in my classroom. These computers are only about two years old, but with daily use by over 100 students their batteries have been recharged close to 400 times and their battery life is dwindling fast. Many of the batteries are already beginning to fail. This frustrates students and has a negative impact on instruction. With replacement batteries these workhorse laptops will be useable by students for another two years. My classroom is scheduled to receive netbooks in the fall as part of the i21 initiative. At that time these computers will be passed on to a science or history teacher. (I am currently working to upgrade the operating system in all of these machines so they will be compatible with newer web applications for my current students and in the future.) The battery for this model (Lenovo R61) is priced between $40-70 depending on sales incentives. I am hoping that one supplier would be able to provide me with all 38 of them. I plan to contact the seller and ask for a bulk rate / teacher discount. There is a lot of useable life left in these computers for students, but for the want of a $50 battery. Beneficiaries (who and how many)? 11th grade American Lit students and my CAHSEE support class, about 100 students per day this year and potentially many more in the next two-three years these batteries will last. This is a one time expense. After another 2-3 years of use these computers will be outdated and most classrooms will by then have netbooks for students through i21. 4. MS. KWAYANA'S REQUEST a. Stipend for The Bomani Drummers, a group of African Dancers, drummers, and one stilt dancer to give a lunchtime performance in honor of Black History Month AND also to CELEBRATE AND GIVE SOLIDARITY TO THE HEROIC PEOPLE OF HAITI. (500.00) b. TO UNDERWRITE A FIELDTRIP TO THE CYGNET THEATER TO SEE THE PIANO LESSON. THE BUS COST IS NOT DEFINITE YET NOR IS THE NUMBER OF THOSE WHO WILL ATTEND. THE PIANO LESSON IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 25-35 WHO SIGN UP AND PAY THEIR PORTION ($350) 5. COUNSELING REQUEST Counseling would appreciate the funding of a NAVIANCE additional component for $395.00 called Learning Styles Inventory. This component is an assessment that students take (on their own, with a Counselor or the EOS indiv/or group. The Learning 7 Styles inventory gives the student insight into how he/she learns and gives suggestions for ways to apply the results in their daily lives. It is also a helpful Component for the counselors, teachers, SpEd staff as they work with students to set up schedules, homework, lessons in class, etc. All PLHS staff has access to see a students’ results – thus it can be incorporated into how the teacher works with individual students – especially those with IEPs & 504s. It’s very helpful to seniors as they are planning their roommate situations for college. Beneficiaries (who and how many)? All PLHS students – freshmen & seniors especially as well as the Special Education Population – our current enrollment is about 2100 students. Matching funds available? none From where: n/a What alternative funding sources, if any, were explored? No one really. However, since Naviance has been purchased by the district and we are not paying for it any more – counseling has been told the site must pay one-year expense or on-going/annual expense? Please provide details and additional information: It should be an ongoing/annual expense – Naviance has been purchased for 5 years by the district so it would be fabulous to have the learning styles inventory for that time as well (current expiration is 9/14. Re: History Awards Banquet We are recommending partial funding of up to $1,000 to be used specifically for purchasing pens, paper awards certificates, and for up to 30 banquet tickets for those students who otherwise could not afford to attend. Any unused amount will remain with the PA to be used for G/G purposes. Re: NJROTC Request: We have already received more requests than we can fund and must look at each one carefully to determine where our dollars can have the most impact. Although the NJROTC program has already received support from the PA this school year, we recognize they need ongoing, yearly financial support. The Gifts and Grants committee is recommending a partial award of up to $150 to be used to cover the cost of awards and engraving of their perpetual awards. Any unused portion of the award will remain with the PLHSPA, specifically for the purpose of G/G. Re Ms. Kwayana's requests: 8 The G/G committee recommends the grant requests not be funded at this time (one impacted only a few students and the other request needed some further investigation as to other funding). G/G suggests Ms. Kwayana approach our local Kiwanis or Rotary Clubs as a possible funding source as soon as possible. They do invite speakers to attend their meetings and that would be a great opportunity for one of her students to present the request. Re: Ms. Roberts request: Her request qualifies for funding from what remains of 3 donor-designated accounts (Technology, Digital Classrooms and 21st Century Learning), which will purchase 17 replacement batteries of the 38 needed. We are recommending a partial award of up to $840 to purchase the remaining batteries needed for her classroom laptops. Any unused portion of the award will remain with the PLHSPA, specifically for the purpose of G/G. Re: Learning Styles Inventory request We recommend funding this request for the full amount, $395. VOTE: Eleanor moved to approve the recommendations in full, Monica seconded. The votes were all in favor - Ian Law, Monica Adams, Joan Irvine, Eleanor Snyder, Darlene Truver, Carol Strack, Lucy DeVito and Kris Spathas. 9
