Dear Families, Please continue reading to your child during the summer as it is a motivational key to success in learning to read. In accordance with the New York Common Core Standards, we are requesting that all children entering pre-kindergarten read at least one book from each category before September 2015. Have your child make a small picture book by drawing a picture of each story and poem they have been read and give it to their new teacher. As per the Pre-Kindergarten writing Common Core Standard, this will help your child with prompting and support to use a combination of drawings, dictating or writing to express an opinion about the book. Pre-Kindergarten Summer Reading List: Story Books: A Funny Little Bird by Jennifer Yerkes Memoirs of a Goldfish by Devin Scillian One by Kathryn Otoshi The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywait & Oliver Jeffers The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli Informational Texts: All Kinds of Families by Mary Ann Hoberman and Marc Boutavant Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do by Kathryn Heling How Big Were Dinosaurs? by Lita Judge Mix it Up by Herve Tullet My Five Senses by Aliki Poems: Thunder by Bobbi Katz Hear him tumble grumble rumble… Bash, crash blunder – old ground thunder! Always in a mood to fight – morning, afternoon or night. Lightning quickly answers back with a zig-zag flashing CRACK! I Dreamed a Dream by Gareth Lancaster I dreamed a dream in bed last night, Of places most bizarre. Of ponds of liquid lemon pie, And ducks that played guitar. Special Kid by Sue LaBella I am a special kid No one else is just like me, My body is my own It’s special don’t you see? Of perfect puzzle paths, And grass of jellybeans. Of crumpet homes and candy gnomes, Such things I’d never seen. I have two busy hands, And two active feet, My mom seems to think That I am pretty neat. Of glinting, misty marble stars, And clouds of thick éclair. Of crayon boats and biscuit goats, A weird and strange affair. I use my special mouth To smile and to sing, To talk with my friends And eat yummy things. I flew past trees of centipedes, And over fondant hills. Past eight-leg cats and purple rats, A world so full of thrills. When it’s time for bed I use my won mouth too, To whisper “Goodnight – I’ll always love you too.” I dived beneath a soapy lake, Through plastic kelp and Bream. And swam with rainbow octopus, Past shores of clotted cream. And down below the treacle waves, I spied a feathered bee. But with a start I woke to find, My pillows eating me!
