Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten! Your child will be embarking on a journey that will lead to many new discoveries and excitement throughout the year! We are very excited for an enjoyable educational year of learning! Pre-Kindergarten Tidbits: Academics: We have a lot of fun and stimulating educational experiences planned throughout the school year as we weave eight fun learning units into our daily routines of literacy, math, science, social studies, social skills and motor skills. The curriculums we follow in pre-k include: Opening the World of Learning, Handwriting Without Tears, Second Step, Responsive Classroom, math meeting and letter of the week. If you would like more information on the curriculum, please contact us. Communication: The pre-kindergarten teachers will send home a weekly newsletter giving an overview of what your child is learning, as well as weekly suggested activities to incorporate at home with your child. We will have two parent conferences during the school year. The teachers are available by email (preferred) and phone for any comments or questions. The ALA website is another great way to find school information (http://www.athlosbrooklynpark.org). Weekly homework will be sent home every Monday in a green homework folder (starting on the second week of Sept. 14th). Educational growth happens when parents are an active part in child’s daily learning. Please take the time to ask your child about their school day and incorporate school related activities at home. Extra Clothes/Bathroom Procedures: Please bring in two extra sets of the school uniform for your child to keep at school just in case an accident may occur (pants, underwear, shirt, socks). Please label all items and put in a plastic zip lock bag with the child’s name on the bag. If an accident happens, please wash and return the clothes to school. During the school day we take several bathroom breaks and encourage the children to take advantage of the opportunity. We do not have a bathroom in the classroom, but it is just down the hall if urgent. Please review with your child bathroom procedures as this will help with efficiency throughout our day. Rest Time: Rest/quiet time is an important part of our day to help our brains recharge. Please provide a foldable nap mat that will fit in a cubby with the dimensions of 7inches x 16inches. Your child is welcome to bring in a small blanket to help them rest comfortably (Please DO NOT send any other toys, food, stuffed animals, or personal items to school.) To help prepare your child for this time of day, please talk with them about the importance of helping our brains recharge and lying quietly on a mat. We look forward to a year of partnership and new discoveries for your student! Please feel free to email with any questions.
