Our Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on March 30th proved a great success, featuring speeches from Representative Brian White of Anderson, SCPRT Director Duane Parrish, and Town of Pendleton Mayor Frank Crenshaw. Chairman White remarked, "I came in through Hurley Badders 'old' office window (referring to the relocated door), and will be going out through the doors where a flock of Pete McConnell's artistic 'gourd chickens' once roosted! What a change!" A ribbon cutting ceremony on the front steps of the building capped the long-awaited opening. Among the guests at the ceremony were "Gil" Hunter and Benjie and Marcia Purcell, representing the descendants of the Hunter family who owned and operated the General Store in the building for many years. We are grateful to all those who assisted with the move and the preparation for the opening including; Hatfield Builders, All J's Catering, and Frady's Moving Company of Walhalla, who successfully moved the 4.5 tons of archival shelving, files, cabinets and artifacts to the upstairs archive space in Hunter's Store...without a single broken or lost artifact! The Commission thanks them for a job very well done. All that remains of the renovation process will be to seal the envelope of the building by tuck-pointing the brick exterior and landscaping the front entry to make it more accessible and attractive. These tasks will take time and funding, but are necessary to ensure that our largest artifact, May 5-6: Outdoor Living Expo May 11: Blue Ridge Fest May 12: Old-Time Music Gathering Hunters Store, will stand another 162 years! If you have yet to come by and see the beautiful renovation work to the interior of Hunter's Store, please plan a visit soon. The front doors, which had been sealed from 1968 - 2009, are now open to visitors, and the opening cut for a door in 1968 has been closed with the doorway relocated to its original position, functioning as our handicap entrance. FREE RECIPE Marmalade Tea Cakes by Mrs. John Patrick Sullivan (Alice Linder) Taken from "Tea Time in Old Pendleton," a recipe book published by The Foundation for Historic Restoration in the Pendleton Area (1966). This receipt was taken from a cook book belonging to my grandmother, Mrs. I. H. McCalla (Raymond Speed). If you make only half of it you will still have plenty of cookies. 1 pound of butter 1 pound of sugar 1 1/2 pounds flour 1 wineglass of wine Cold water Marmalade Meringue (egg whites and loaf sugar) Lemon and vanilla flavoring Directions: Add just enough water to make a stiffish dough. Roll into a paste about a quarter of an inch thick and cut with a tumbler. Prick them and bake in a quick oven. Spread over the top a coat of marmalade, and on this a meringue made of loaf sugar and the whites of eggs, and flavored with lemon or vanilla. Return to the oven until this is a light brown color. Find more great recipes in the Tea Time in Old Pendleton recipe book. Visit Pendleton Historic Foundation to purchase the recipe book and take a tour of Ashtabula or Woodburn Historic Houses.
