A Graduate Research Assistantship is available for a Ph.D. or M.S. student starting in Spring 2016 or later in the DeWalt and Agudelo laboratories in Clemson University (http://www.clemson.edu/biosci/sdewalt/). The successful candidate will conduct research on different aspects of the nematode Ditylenchus gallaeformans as a potential biological control agent for the invasive weed Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae). We are examining genetic differentiation in both the weed and its proposed biocontrol agent across the plant's wide native range (Central and South America and Caribbean). Greenhouse experiments will be conducted to compare pathogenicity and virulence of nematode populations collected from a range of native and invasive host-plant genotypes. Experience in plant biology, nematology, plant pathology, and molecular biology is desirable but not required. The position will be ideal for a self-motivated person interested in the advancement of scientific knowledge of plant-associated nematodes. The successful candidate will work within a collaborative, diverse, and multi-disciplinary environment. The student will be enrolled in a program towards obtaining a M.S. or Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or in Plant and Environmental Sciences. The position will remain open until filled. Job Requirements A B.A. or B.S. degree in a biology-related discipline is required. Experience working in a research laboratory is preferred and skills in plant biology, nematology, plant pathology, and molecular biology are desired but not required. Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential for the successful candidate. The candidate should send a letter of interest, CV, list of names and contact information of two references, and unofficial transcripts to Dr. Saara DeWalt directly at saarad@clemson.edu. Top candidates will be encouraged to apply to the Clemson University Graduate School at http://www.clemson.edu/graduate/.
