The Parent Teacher Organization of Lowes Island Elementary School
The PTO’s After School Activity program is ready to start. Classes are $60 each and held immediately after school
and will begin on October 15th and run through November 22nd. Brief class descriptions can be found on pages 2-4.

TUESDAY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Legos Galore
Grades K-2
Instructor: Iris Garza
Students can create to their hearts desire with bins of thousands of Legos. Each week we will explore and build
something new. Mrs. Garza is a parent at Lowes Island.
No-Bake Cooking Class
Grades K-2
$15 Supply Fee
Instructor: Estee Hafassa
No-bake cooking class is for kids who enjoy cooking and helping to make snacks! Students will learn to prepare
snacks independently. Students will bring home food to share with their families. Recipes may include ingredients that
contain peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, dairy, egg, and soy. Mrs. Hafassa is a parent at Lowes Island.
Geography Fun
Grades K-5
Instructor: Meline Petrosyan
Travel with us!! Students will explore the world and learnabout different countries, their culturesand
locations!Students will learn about maps, play geographic gamesand develop a geographic perspective!Ms. Petrosyan
is a parent at Lowes Island.
Math Path
Grades K-5
Instructor: Bob Ilindra
This is a math enrichment class for students who may be struggling with math concepts or just want to do some extra
Math! Math Path will focus on further review of math concepts from class and homework help. We can also play
some math games! Mr. Ilindra is a Lowes Island parent.
Boy’s Sport Conditioning
Grades 2-5
Instructor: Monika Deaton
We will work on sports drills as a group and work our way into smaller groups for circuit training. Fun drills such as
jumping jacks, burpees, suicides, push-ups, basketball/soccer dribbles around cones, running at least one lap around
the track, will keep the kids moving! Each class will begin with a warm-up and end with a cool down. The purpose
for the class is for kids to use their energy, learn proper form to help protect their bodies and learn how to work
together to achieve group goals. We will be outside so appropriate attire is important. Mrs. Deaton is a parent at
Lowes Island.
Holiday Crafts - 6 Presents in 6 Days!
Grades 3-5

Instructor: April Manglaris
Kids will have access to a variety of craft supplies and they can choose to make a gift for their friends and family.
What will you get for your birthday, winter holidays, Mother’s/Father’s Day? Mrs. Manglaris is a parent at Lowes
Island.
Learn to Cross-Stitch
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Ms. Bentzel
Students will learn to use a needle and thread to create fun designs on fabric! Ms. Bentzel is a Kindergarten teacher at
Lowes Island.
Science Fun – Flash, Bubble, Splat!
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Ms. Reisler
Discover science through hands-on experiments with the contents of your kitchen cabinets! There will be many
flashes, bubbles and a few splats! Ms. Reisler is a Fifth Grade teacher at Lowes Island.
Illustration and Cartooning
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Chris Liu
Students will learn basic drawing fundamentals as well as cartooning and illustration techniques. They will also learn
character and scene design and bring their creations to life in a comic/graphic novel format. Mr. Liu is a professional
artist who just graduated from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Animation!
Graphic Design
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Mrs. Roseberry
Students will learn how to manipulate shapes, pictures and text in order to make projects pop! Mrs. Roseberry is a
Fifth Grade teacher at Lowes Island.
WEDNESDAY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Reptiles Alive!
Grades K-2
Instructor: Kassie and Kayla Moghaddam
Students will be able to learn about reptiles and amphibians through hand-outs, activities and games! They will
observe (in totally closed containers) a Bearded Dragon, Box Turtle, Aquatic Red-Eared Slider Turtle, Albino Corn
Snake, Baby Blue Tailed Skink, frogs, toads, Leopard Gecko and a 2 Steppe Runner Lizard. Kayla is a Reptile and
Amphibian “expert” that loves to teach other kids about those species. Mrs. Moghaddam is a parent at Lowes Island.
Board Games Galore
Grades K-2
Instructor: Ms. Williams
Love playing board games? Want to unwind with friends after school? This will be a great class for you! You’ll get
to play a variety of games with other students. We will focus on learning one type of game every week – with plenty
of free-time too! There will be games at all levels so everyone is welcome to come! Ms. Williams is a 2nd grade
teacher at Lowes Island.

Experience 6 Holidays in 6 weeks with this fun, interactive craft class. Take a turn each week making a festive
decoration or charming gift as we turn everyday materials into amazing crafts. Mrs. Hafassa is a parent at Lowes
Island.
Cheerleading
Grades K-2
Instructor: Iris Garza
Come and show your school spirit! Students will learn basic cheerleading drills and skills. Students will also learn
cheers and create their own cheers. Mrs. Garza is a parent at Lowes Island.
Publishing Club
Grades 2-5
Instructor: Kristina Shimazaki
Students will create their own illustrated story which will be professionally bound and made into a special keepsake
(hardcover) book. This will be a great opportunity for students to be involved in literary endeavors and to publish their
own work. Mrs. Shimazaki is a parent at Lowes Island.
Jewelry Making
Grades 3-5
$20 Supply Fee
Instructor: Mrs. Roseberry
Let’s get creative! Come and learn how to make basic beaded bracelets and necklaces. Students will get to keep their
jewelry creation and their personal tool kit! Mrs. Roseberry is a 5th grade teacher at Lowes Island.
Kids Yoga
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Colleen McHale
Learn the fundamentals of yoga in this fun and energetic class! Yoga is a healthy form of exercise and wellness perfect
for all children of any activity level. Yoga is a centuries old tradition that aids in calming breathing techniques,
stretching, focus and physical fitness. It is the perfect addition to a child's busy sports and academic schedule. Ms.
McHale is a certified Yoga Instructor and former Lowes Island parent.
Knitting
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Ms. Bentzel
Winter is coming! Students will learn to make a scarf with knitting needles and yarn. Students will get to keep their
needles and their creation! Ms. Bentzel is a Kindergarten Teacher at Lowes Island.

Hola! Come and learn the basics of Spanish through songs and games. Students will learn at least 20 new vocabulary

Persian-Farsi Fun
Grades K-5
Instructor: Fatemeh Towhidi Estaki
Persian-Farsi language is taught through songs, games and fun activities. Mrs. Estaki is a parent at Lowes Island.
Chess Club
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Mr. Knecht
Checkmate! Come and learn how to play chess with your friends. Mr. Knecht is a 5th grade teacher at Lowes Island.

Learn to build a robot with this amazing new equipment just added to our technology department. Mr. Gray is the
Technology Teacher at Lowes Island and J. Peterson is a parent at Lowes Island.

to be placed on the waiting list. Students will be added in the order that emails are received.
***PLEASE NOTE the age restriction for this class. Students not in Grade 2 or 3 will be dropped from the class.

Learn to create a chain to start crocheting! Studentswill work on creating bookmarks at first and then move on to
starting a scarf! Mrs. Clarke is a parent at Lowes Island.
Sports and Games
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Thomas Newell
Come and learn a different sport or game each week! We will focus on lawn games, table games, playground games
and field games. Mr. Newell is a Lowes Island parent.

FRIDAY CLASS DESCRIPTION
Elementary Ballet
Grades 3-5
Instructor: Ms. Oberlander
This class is designed around a structured classical ballet class in which students learn technique, vocabulary,
flexibility, coordination and confidence. Students will apply their ballet skills to inspired choreography that matches
movement to music through creativity! Ms. O is a 4th grade teacher at Lowes Island
ASAP CLASS INFORMATION
Classes begin at 2:50 pm. Pick-up time is 3:50 pm. (A late fee of $1/minute will be assessed.)
Tuesday classes will be held on October 15, 22, 29, November 12, 19, 26 Make-up Date is December 3rd.
**There is NO school on Tuesday, November 5th.
Wednesday classes will be held on October 16, 23, 30, November 6, 13, 20. Make-up Date isDecember 4th.
Thursday classes will be held onOctober 17, 24, 31, November 7, 14, 21. Make-up Date is December 5th.
Friday classes will be held onOctober 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15, 22. Make-up Date is December 6th.
Upon school dismissal, children will follow the direction provided by their grade level teachers. They will then be
dismissed directly to their ASAP Class Location, where they will be met by their ASAP Instructor
All students must be picked up and signed out of their ASAP class. Students are not allowed to walk home at
the conclusion of their class.
CASA children are welcome to participate and will be escorted to CASA after class.

BEFORE YOU REGISTER:
Create or UPDATE your account athttps://www.pay4schoolstuff.com. PLEASE update your student’s
information, especially their current grade level. This is VERY important to helping the registration process
work smoothly. You can create or update your account at any time.
HOW TO REGISTER:
1. All classes are registered online by logging onto your Pay4SchoolStuff account
2. Click the red ‘select’ button next to the student that you wish to register for ASAP
3. Click the red ‘select’ button next to ASAP Classes
4. You will be directed to the available ASAP classes. Note: The number of available spaces left in the
class will be displayed. Click the select box for any class in which your student is interested. Then
click on the ‘Add to Cart’ button at the bottom of the page.
5. Proceed to payment page
If you do not have access to a computer, please contact the ASAP Coordinator before Monday, September 23rd, at
noon to make other arrangements.
Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATION:
Confirmation letters and parent confirmation forms will come home via the email provided on your account at
https://www.pay4schoolstuff.com. Please let the ASAP Coordinator know if you do not receive your emailby
Wednesday, October 2nd.
PARENT CONFIRMATION FORMS:
Confirmation forms will be emailed along with your confirmation letter. The confirmation form will need to be
PRINTED, FILLED OUT and RETURNED to school no later than Friday, October 4th or your student will not
be able to attend their first ASAP Class.
PAYMENT:All ASAP classes are $60. Supplies and materials are included unless noted. Payment may be made by
Visa, MasterCard or Discover on the website. Class fees are non-refundable.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarships are available for families who meet the Federal Income Guidelines for the Free and
Reduced-Price Meals program. (The school cannot provide verification of eligible students so parents must contact the
ASAP Coordinator with information beforeMonday, September 23rdat noon to ensure your child a spot in the
program.)
MAKE-UP POLICY: After-school classes will not be held if Loudoun County Public Schools are closed due to
inclement weather. In the event of a school closing no ASAP classes will be held. Our schedule allows for ONE
make-up class; however any additional classes cancelled will not be made up due to space limitations and time
constraints.
