Fall of 2012, or later, will follow this plan. Students currently enrolled in Luther College and

 Elementary majors who want to be endorsed K-6 instead of 1-6 in the
State of Minnesota must have EDUC 330: Early Childhood Education I
AND Student Teach in Kindergarten
 At least 19 course equivalents (76 hours) must be completed outside
of the education discipline.
 EDUC 321-EDUC 329 must be taken within one year of student teaching.
 Some states may require more weeks student teaching (i.e. 18
weeks for Wisconsin) to be certified.
Achievement of a “C” or above is required for the “content knowledge”
courses required for licensure. (See the content courses listed above.)
All Elementary Majors MUST have either an academic endorsement OR a
special endorsement and an academic concentration.
Academic Endorsement:
If the student selects one of the academic endorsements, he or she must complete the
approved courses for a K-8 academic endorsement.
OR
Special Endorsement:
Early Childhood, Pre-kindergarten-Kindergarten, Elementary Reading, Middle School
Specialist, [must select two of the following areas: Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and
Science], ESL/Bilingual, and Instructional Strategist II: BD&LD
AND
Academic Concentration:
-12 s.h. in one academic department outside of Education
OR
-12 s.h. in science [made up of a combination of Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, or Physical
Science courses]
OR
-12 s.h. in social sciences [made up of a combination of Economics, Accounting and Business,
History, Anthropology, Sociology/Social Work, and Psychology courses]
