About Mrs. Aguiar • This is my 13th year at Summit. • I have taught all four, 8th grade core classes. • I LOVE 8th graders! • I’m married and have 2 daughters Communication • It is the key to success • Let’s work together! • This is what I will do: – Stamp PRIDE planners to assure you that your child is writing down his or her homework every week! – Update Teacherweb – Homework posted weekly – Send messages using Newsflash – Respond to e-mails – jennifer_aguiar@etiwanda.org Language Arts • Content standards are lengthy • They include: –writing –reading –vocabulary –grammar –listening and speaking Language Arts • Literature & Language Arts book – Main components (for in class use) – Also used for homework • Other components used are: – – – – – Vocabulary Workshop –level C Warriner’s Handbook (textbook) in class only Interactive Reader Step up to Writing Core Literature books Independent Reading • Students are required to read books from Accelerator Reader book program. • Each book has a point value. • Students are to read the book and then take a quiz. • Quizzes assess how well the student comprehended the book. • Each student is given a goal based on their reading independent level. Language Arts • Parents can now track student progress • Start at our districts web site • Parents tab • Library Resources - Renaissance Home Connect core literature: • The Outsiders • The Glory Field Essays • Essay Writing: autobiographical, persuasive, response to literature, business letters, technical document, and a biography/research paper. • Essays are written over the span of a couple of weeks • I prefer them typed. • Essays are graded on a 4-point scale to help prepare students for grading on the CAHSEE. Social Studies • U.S. History, from colonies to the Reconstruction of the Civil War. • I use a combination of projects and tests. • Community Service-6 hours per trimester, but count as extra credit. Classroom Rules 1. Respect yourself & all others in the classroom. 2. Follow all directions & school rules. 3. Come to class prepared. 4. Be in your seat & ready when the bell rings. 5. Always try your best. 1. Praise. Rewards 2. 3. 4. 5. Treats Homework or late pass. Positive call or note home. Treats for no missing assignments-at 6 weeks (I pay) 6. Lunch for no missing assignments-at end of trimester (You pay/I organize) Consequences 1. Warning. 2. Reflection & action plan, signed by parent. 3. Lunch Detention. 4. Parent Contact. 5. After School Detention. 6. Office Referral. * In severe cases immediate office intervention would be utilized. Homework • Every Monday-Thursday • Check the PRIDE planner or my website: – http://teacherweb.com/CA/SummitIntermediat e/MrsAguiar/apt7.aspx • Homework is posted Monday for the week • PRIDE planners are stamped weekly to insure students are using them • Check the web site throughout the week for possible changes Absent & Late Work Absents • Absent work picked up by student from absent folders on wall. • I encourage students to speak with friends about what was missed, then talk with me. • Absent tests will be re-scheduled. Late work • No late homework accepted (1day assignments) • 10% off each day a project is late for a total of 5 days. Grading Categories Language Arts & Social Studies • • • • Test – 35% Quizzes & projects - 30% Class work - 25% Homework - 10% Grading Scale • Traditional Grading Scale • 100-90%=A • 89-80%=B • 79-70%=C • 69-60%=D • Anything below 60% is failing ESPRI Online Grade Book • Check your students grades on-line at: https://espri-web.etiwanda.k12.ca.us/ • You need to register on-line to gain access to your child’s information. • Have your child’s up-to-date grade information with just a few clicks of the mouse. • Grades are updated weekly. th 8 Grade Promotion • Participation in the promotion ceremony and activities is based on grade and behavior. – (Specific detail are explained in the PRIDE Planner) Parent Conferences • Take place with homeroom teachers • November 4-9 • I will send information out in October Thank you for coming!
