Day 1 Literary Devices Vocabulary
Big Idea: Literary Devices
Acquire
Introduce literary devices by providing definitions
and examples
Apply/Deepen
Students will use Quizlet to connect literary devices
to their respective examples. They will then be
tested with the clickers.
Homework:
• Relook over lit. devices and list ones found in
book
• read chapter 1 by Wednesday, chapter 2 by
Thursday, and Chapter 3 by Friday
Day 2 Heart of Darkness Background Info.
Big Idea: Historical Perspective
Acquire
Review notetaking technique; American Notebook,
and introduce Heart of Darkness
Provide information about the historical perspective
• Imperialism of England
• Slavery
• Publication aspects of the novel
• Biographical information on Joseph Conrad
This information will enable the students to develop
a basic understanding of Heart of Darkness and
how its historical perspective influences the
reader’s interpretations.
Apply/Deepen
When students read the novel, they will be using
this historical perspective to develop a clearer
interpretation of the events taking place.
Homework:
• read chapter 1 for tomorrow, chapter 2 by
Thursday, and Chapter 3 by Friday
Day 3 Chapter 1 Review
Due: chapter 1
Acquire
Quiz reviewing what was read for today. Then the
students will review chapter 1 with the knowledge
aspect of Blooms by doing a word wall with
characters and aspects of novel.
Apply/Deepen
Interactive lecture on chapter 1; Chunk 1- setting,
and Chunk 2 plot while purpose is all
encompassing. Students will fill out a story map
worksheet during the lecture.
Homework:
Chapter 2 for tomorrow and Chapter three for
Friday
Day 4 Chapter 2 Review
Due: Chapter 2
Acquire
Quiz reviewing what was read for today. Then the
students will review chapter 2 with the knowledge
aspect of Blooms by doing a word wheel with
characters and aspects of novel.
Apply/Deepen
Interactive lecture on chapter 2; plot, setting,
purpose. Compare chapter 1 with chapter 2.
Students will fill out a story map activity sheet
during the lecture.

Day 5 Chapter 3 Review
Due: Chapter 3
Acquire
Quiz reviewing what was read for today. Then the
students will review chapter 3 with the knowledge
aspect of Blooms by doing a word wall with
characters and aspects of novel.

Interactive lecture on chapter 3; plot, setting,
purpose. Compare chapter 1 and 2 with chapter 3.

Day 6 Themes, Morals, and the Purpose
Due: Raft with alternative endings
Acquire
Pass out “read with a pencil” “Heart of Darkness
Critical Evaluation” article. Students will read with a
pencil to mentally prepare themselves for the
analysis discussion. I will then read my raft aloud
and explain why I wrote it. Allow students to do the
same and collect them.
Apply/Deepen
Whole class discussion of one’s interpretations of
the analysis of the themes, morals, and ideas
within the book. Introduce the conflicts to class and
fill out story map (Freytags pyramid)
• Conflicts brought upon by the misconception of
authority.
• Perceptions of morals, empathy for slaves,
explanation.
Homework: fill out a character map on an assigned
character.
Day 7 Chacacter Perspectives
Due: Character map
Acquire
I will explain the monologues: students will be put in
groups of their assigned characters and develop a
monologue to read to the class about the
characters.
Apply/Deepen
While creating the monologues students will
support their evidence with examples from the
story. Then they must explain their monologues
and why it was important to the story.
• Introduce the performance assessment, the
rubric, and assign groups of 3. Due Monday.
Homework:
Begin thinking about the project.
Compare and contrast graphic organizer on the
European characters and the native African
characters
Day 8 Authority Discussion
Big Idea: Authority
Acquire
With a partner, compare the “compare and contrast
graphic organizer” activity sheet and add new
information. In groups of 4, discuss one another’s
“compare and contrast graphic organizer” in order
to develop a more varied collection. Then,
introduce the idea of how and why authority was
determined.
Apply/Deepen
TPV: Authority and justification:
How is authority decided? Are the European
worker’s actions justifiable?
Statement: European laborers had the right to
enslave the African laborers.

Day 9 Big Idea Discussion Day 1
Big Idea: Influence of the Setting

Students will complete a setting activity sheet

In a fishbowl form of discussion, the inner circle will
discuss their interpretations of the setting. The tone,
author’s purpose, historical perspective, literary
devices connected with it, and the use of authority
depicted in each different setting.
* Any extra time will be spent on their projects
Day 10 Big Idea Discussion Day 2
Acquire
The information from the previous day will be
refreshed for the students. Once their brains are
warmed up, the next discussion will begin.

discuss their interpretations of the setting. The
tone, author’s purpose, historical perspective,
literary devices connected with it, and the use of
authority depicted in each different setting.
