ALICE IN WONDERLAND, JR. INFORMATION SHEET 1. What is the play about? Alice is an ever-curious girl who finds herself in the wacky world of Wonderland! Her journey begins innocently enough as she chases the White Rabbit. Her adventures become increasingly more strange as she races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game! At the end of all her adventures, Alice wakes up and realizes it was all a dream…. Or was it? 2. How many different characters are there? There are over 22 characters with speaking roles, though this show NEEDS lots of characters to fill the wacky world of Wonderland! Characters such as the Rock Lobsters, Walking Fish, Royal Cardsmen, and Creatures are all necessary to making this show really incredible- the “ensemble” is one of the best things about this show! There is a part for everyone! 3. When is the play? FRIDAY and SATURDAY April 29th & 30th. Please make sure you don’t have plans to go away this weekend 4. What will auditions be like? The auditions are on Tues. AND Wed.., Jan. 19th AND 20th. You should arrive to the auditorium at 5:30pm to fill out your audition paperwork. Everyone will have a seat in the auditorium, and Ms. Lewis and Ms. Bruno will go over the evening ahead. After that, everyone will head to the Music Room to hang out and wait for your turn to sing for the judges in the auditorium. We will begin with the singing part of the audition- your song should be a short example showing your vocal talent (ex: verse or chorus of a song.) You might get stopped early, but don’t get upset- we just have a lot of students to get through After the singing, we will pair students up to do readings on stage of scripts from the show. This part of the audition will be longer, and that is why there are two days scheduled. Not everyone will get to read on Tuesday night, though EVERYONE must come back on Wednesday for additional readings and call-backs. After everyone has gone, we will keep some students and send some home. If you are sent home early, this does not mean that you didn’t do well- it just means we are sure of your part, and those we keep after we are less sure of where to cast them! No matter what part you’re auditioning for, everyone must sing and do a reading. 5. What will rehearsals be like? Rehearsals are held during the week on various days from roughly 6-8pm. We will also have occasional Saturday rehearsals, in addition to select after school rehearsals (especially for choreography.) Not everyone will be required at rehearsal each night, and as long as each student puts their availability on their audition forms, Ms. Lewis and Ms. Bruno will do their very best to not schedule someone to come on a time when they already have a prior commitment (such as religious education, dance classes, etc.) Sometimes, it is unavoidable and scheduling conflicts do occur and students will have to make choices as to which activity to attend. On nights/days that choreography is scheduled, attendance is critical, as our choreographer Jeorgi is only available during certain time slots. Please be sure to attend EVERY choreography rehearsal. During the rehearsal time, some students will be there the entire period, sometimes they will only be called in for a short time, like 6:30-7:15pm for example. The schedule will be clear (TURN OVER…) 6. What if I have other commitments during the week? In the beginning of the season, your other commitments will be understood if you can’t attend rehearsal. However, these commitments need to be stated on your audition forms. Any conflicts you don’t mention on your form will not be considered. Once we are in the final weeks of show preparation after Spring Break, the play will need to become your #1 priority and you will need to attend ALL rehearsals. The dress rehearsals, which will take place the week of the show, are mandatory for all members, no excuses will be considered. Otherwise, the general attendance policy is as follows: all students will be allowed up to 3 unexcused absences (absences that are not due to being absent from school or having a commitment you already alerted Ms. Lewis or Ms. Bruno about.) If you have more than 3 unexcused absences, your membership or part in the Drama Club may be jeopardized. Being in the Drama Club requires dedication from ALL members to make the show the best it can be- it is not fair to the cast members working hard on their material when other students miss too many rehearsals. 7. What about Set Design Club and Stage Crew? What’s the deal with those groups? The Set Design Club are the kids who help design, paint, and put together the set pieces and props for the play. Students who are in actual play can also be members of this club. This club won’t get started up until late February-early March. The Stage Crew are the people that wear all black and move the set pieces around to change the scenery. Students who are in the Set Design Club can also join this group, but students in the actual play cannot. This group will not get started until late March-early April. 8. Anything else I should know??? All students should plan to purchase their own makeup for the show. Theatre makeup kits may be available for sale, or you can buy your own products (mascara, foundation, etc.) at a pharmacy, Walmart, etc. More information will be available about this after the auditions are complete. A nice pair of shoes is a good thing to have for the play! Most of the characters in this play will wear either pumps/dress shoes or jazz shoes (flat, flexible shoes similar to ballet flats), so depending on your role, you should plan ahead to wear something like those. If you need to wear pumps, character shoes for girls are great (available at any dance store). Boys will likely wear either nice dress shoes or something like jazz shoes. Whatever your part, our costumers will tell you what you should be wearing with regards to shoes and anything else. We will talk about this further after the cast is set, but do be aware of this! Regardless of your role in your play, your academics must still be a priority for you. If your grade in any class drops below a C- , you will not be able to continue with the play. If you’re finding it hard to keep up with your school work at any point throughout the season, just talk to Ms. Lewis so we can work it out and make sure you can continue! The Drama Club is LOTS of fun!!! There’s no doubting it’s a lot of work, but it is a truly rewarding experience, and one you’ll remember for your lifetime- you might even find it’s your hidden passion We hope to see you all at the auditions on January 19th AND 20th!!!
