Essential Questions:
Know that Government exists to serve the people, and there are different forms, systems and kinds of governments
Understand the Structure of the Constitution and know the Principles of the Constitution
Relate to the Constitution and understand the impact of current events on the living document
Recognize various levels of government in everyday life
1st Six Weeks Objectives and I CAN statements By the end of this unit, the student CAN:
Define Government
Evaluate how levels of government serve the purposes set forth in the Constitution
Identify characteristics of forms of government
Define systems of government and analyze advantages and disadvantages
Analyze advantages and disadvantages of parliamentary and presidential systems
Explain the significance of landmark documents: the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution
Identify the steps that led to colonial unity
Describe the structure of the government set up under the Articles of Confederation
Describe how the need for a stronger National Government led to plans for the Constitutional Convention
Identify the framers of the Constitution and the details of the Philadelphia Convention
Analyze the debates and compromises necessary for ratifying the Constitution
Outline the important elements of the Constitution
List the six basic principles of the Constitution and evaluate constitutional principles for limiting the role of government
Analyze the processes by which the US Constitution can be changed
