• Greece is located on the
Balkan Peninsula in Europe.
• It is a the southern tip and is
made up of many islands.
• To find Greece on a map:
Locate the US and go straight
across to Europe.
Find the tall, high-heeled
witch’s boot (Italy).
Remember she got mad,
kicked back, & scattered
Greece into the islands in the
sea.
The Olympics-----Ancient Greece
• Started in Ancient Greece in
the city of Olympia.
• In Ancient Greece only free
male Greeks could compete.
• There were only a few sport
in the Ancient Olympics,
discus throwing, javelin
throwing, wrestling, running,
& chariot races.
• The games only took place in
the summer.
• Winners got an olive branch
• A flame was lit at the
beginning of the games and
was not blown out until the
end.
The Olympics-----Modern Games
• The Olympics today are held
all over the world.
• Any man or woman may
compete for their country.
• The are many sports in
today’s games.
• In the Modern Games there
is both a summer and winter
Olympics.
• Today, there are 3 winners for
each event who receive a
Gold, Silver, or Bronze Medal.
• A flame is still lit at the
beginning of the games and
stays lit for the entire length
of the games.
Greek Architecture
• Ancient Greece is famous for
it’s architecture, particularly
it columns.
• One famous building is the
Parthenon.
In the United States we have one
building that was modeled to look like
the Parthenon and that is the United
States Supreme Court Building in
Washington, D.C.
Legal System
• Ancient Greece:
• Established the first legal
system
• Created Positive Law-laws
that are fair & for the good of
the people
• Set up the first court & jury
system.
United States:
• Modeled our court system after Ancient
Greece’s
• Copied the idea of positive law so that all
men are treated fairly.
• It is guaranteed in the US Constitution
that citizens have a right to a trial by jury.
Choosing a Leader
• Athens established the idea
that a community should
choose its own leaders.
• The United States copied this
idea when they established
our nation.
• A community choosing its on
leaders is called a democracy.
• Leaders should rule with the
best interests of the
community in mind.
Democracy
• Ancient Greece
• Athens was a Direct
Democracy.
• Direct Democracy: decisions
are made directly by the
citizens.
• United States
• The United States is a
Representative Democracy
• Representative Democracy:
citizens elect a smaller group of
citizens to make decisions for
everyone.
