VIRTUE of the MONTH: The virtue of the month is RESPONSIBILITY. Responsibility means being in control of our own behavior. I am responsible when I complete my homework on time. I am responsible when I look neat with my shirt tucked in and my tie clipped on. FAMILY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY [Each month we will provide a short family engagement activity that you can do with your family throughout the month. This month we are going to focus on READING! 20 minutes per night for reading will greatly improve Reading Growth, but many families struggle with finding time at the end of a busy day. Here are some ways to fit in 20 minutes of reading with your scholar each day: In the car? On the bus? On the go? Have your scholar read to you as you travel. Use these prompts to deepen understanding as they read: UPA Scholars Posing University Preparatory Academy is looking for scholars! What do you think will happen next? Tell me what you just read in your own words. What is going on right now in the story? Cooking Dinner? Have your scholar provide the “entertainment” as you cook. Allow them to read their books out loud to you as you prepare the family dinner. In the Store? Your scholars can use their reading skills to read labels and signs while in the store. Ask the following questions: Can you use the signs to tell me what items are in this aisle? I’m thinking about buying this, can you tell me what it says? Use your sounds if you can’t figure out the word. Also parents, if you are in need of books for reading, please write a note in the communication log and we can provide books on your scholar’s level. Do you know families that may be interested in the University Preparatory Academy experience? Our classes are filled with rigorous academics, character and leadership development, and individualized help for students that are in need. We still have seats in Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade. Interested families simply have to visit the school anytime between 7:30 and 5:00 pm or call 561-670-1138.
