COMM 2321: A Class Crucial for Developing Writing Skills Writing for strategic communication is known to be one of the most helpful classes to student at The Ohio State University COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 25, 2014-Every semester at the Ohio State University students are given the opportunity to learn the fundamental skills of AP style writing, journalistic and promotional writing. Professors in the communications department teach writing for strategic communication every semester with a goal in mind: to make students better strategic communicators. Dan Caterinicchia, the director of student media, and a professor who teaches writing for strategic communication said, “If the student puts in the effort they will be better strategic communicators when they’re done.” Communication is one of the top ten majors at Ohio State; therefore the curriculum is designed to set up students for success. Each class has a specific set of skills that are vital in journalism, public relations, marketing communication, advertising, persuasion and public theory and communication campaigns. Although all of the courses in the strategic communication major are important, writing for strategic communication is arguably the most important. These are some of benefits from taking this course: Learning proper AP style rules (the style of writing that is used in magazines, newspapers and press releases.) Skills and techniques for interviewing people for journalistic and promotional stories. The differences between journalistic writing, promotional writing and broadcast writing. Perfected writing pieces for a portfolio that students will need further on in their careers. Learning how to edit, ruthlessly, until it’s perfect. The Public Relations Student Society of America organization at Ohio State emphasizes the importance of this course to their members. It is advised to take this course early on because it's the best preparation for internships in the public relations field. Aurora Stromberg, the former PRSSA president said, “It’s a great class to take before your first internship to get the basics down. It’s a class where you can tell if someone hasn’t taken it.” At PRSSA meetings they hold workshops for how to create a good press release, because good writing is crucial in any form of strategic communication. Writing for strategic communication teaches the skills, knowledge and techniques to build a phenomenal writing piece. The PRactice, an extension of PRSSA, is a nationally affiliated student-run PR firm at Ohio State. One of the requirements for being in an executive position is taking writing for strategic communication. Chelsea Hagan, who is the firm coordinator for the PRactice said, “Writing for strategic communications in one of the classes where everything started to click for me. Knowing the standards for writing is crucial to every aspect of any future career, especially in communication.” Students who are majoring in Communication or Journalism can benefit from taking this course. It's a course that will teach valuable sets of skills that will enhance a college resume. “You’re going to learn stuff in here that you’ll be expected to know later on,” said Caterinicchia.
