Who affects the development of a mental disorder?

Depression, a very common mental disorder among society today, has many causes. One of these is stress.

1 Stress can be influenced by many different people, such as teachers, peers, co-workers/bosses, parents, significant others, etc. Other causes of depression include genetics, illness, gender, and an ageing brain. Depression can grow into many other mental disorders.

Your environment heavily influences your mental health. The household you grow up in affects many mental disorders 2 , for example someone abused as a child is more likely to develop bipolar disorder.

3 Abuse and trauma is also linked with diseases such as Personality disorder 4 , eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa 5 and bulimia nervosa 6 , schizoaffective disorder, and dissociative identity disorder.

Another cause of many mental disorders is genetics. This is a common cause of diseases 78 such as schizophrenia 9 , Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease. Someone with a family history of such disease is more likely to develop it, therefore it is easier to find in the early stages, though most of the time these diseases are incurable.
