Any student interested in the course must be a declared Business Administration, Communicative Arts, or Sport and Exercise Science Major. c. The course description would read, “Sport management teaches students to work in a wide variety of areas, including corporate fitness, professional and amateur sports organizations, recreation programming, sport facility management, and sports marketing.” III. To illustrate the amount of money going through sports, the top franchise in the US is the New York Yankees, valued at $2.3 Billion. c. Because of the high percentage of athletes at WLC, a Sport Management course would garner high interest. IV. The next step of proposing a new course is establishing the target audience. a. Business Administration Majors would be the primary target group for the course as it would qualify as an elective for the Management and Marketing Emphasis. b. Sports and Exercise Science is the secondary target and could take the course as an elective. c. Communicative Arts Majors would be allowed to take the course as an elective. d. A student seeking to obtain a Coaching Minor would be allowed to take the course as an elective. V. The proposal of a new course requires assessing a predicted enrollment as well as staffing implications. a. An adjunct professor, with expertise and experience in the field, would need to be hired to teach the course. i. Possible candidates would include former or current Athletic Directors or individuals with experience in management roles of sports organizations. ii. With vision 20/20, the growth of the student body will in turn force a need for more classes and professors. b. The projected class size, taking into consideration ratios and group activities, would be between 20 and 30 students. Mantz 3 i. With Business, Communicative Arts, and Sport and Exercise Science Majors in the course, class dynamics would create interesting view points and discussion. ii. Due to varying course loads based on sports seasons, the course will be offered in both fall and spring. VI. The financial impact of adding the course would be minimal. a. Existing classrooms in Generac Hall, Library, and Stimac Hall would all be sufficient for the course. b. WLC has the current technology to facilitate the course. c. With Milwaukee and major sports organizations in close proximity to the college, the possibility of guest speakers would maximize the educational content of the course. VII. In order for WLC to grow and compete with other institutions, adding offerings in Sport Management is necessary. a. Concordia University Wisconsin offers a Major in Sport and Entertainment Management. b. Cardinal Stritch University offers a Major in Sport Management. c. Marian Univeristy in Fond du Lac offers a Major in Sport and Recreation Management. d. Lakeland College offers a minor in Sport Management. VIII. The floor will be open for a question and answer period. IX. A secondary conclusion will be given with a summary and a motion to vote on adding the new course. Mantz 4 References Academic Catalog.
