London
Capital
London is the capital of England and the United
Kingdom, the largest metropolitan area in the United
Kingdom and the largest urban zone in the European
Union by most measures. London has been a major
settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its
founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium.
London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains
its square-mile mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the
19th century, the name London has also referred to the
metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this
conurbation forms the London region and the Greater
London administrative area, governed by the elected
Mayor of London and the London Assembly.
London cuisine
London cuisine is not very popular in the world as it is
famous of being heavy and unhealthy. The traditional
English breakfast consists of: bacon, eggs, toast,
tomatoes, beans, sometimes oatmeal flakes,
mushrooms or sausages. This breakfast is usually
served in local pubs, shops, petrol stations and its called
„early bird” or „morning deli”. Together with coffee&tee
machines this kind of eating out is very popular among
working people who rush to work every morning. There
is not much left to mention about English dinner or great
English restaurants as fish&chips take away is the
English best know „fish”.
City is a major cultural center where you can find many famous places
Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in
London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of
London, which gives it its name.It has become an iconic symbol of
London. The bridge consists of two towers which are tied together at
the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways which are
designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the
suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the
towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended
sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried
by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating
machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's
present colour dates from 1977 when it was painted red, white and
blue for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Originally it was painted a
chocolate brown colour.
Big Ben
Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the
clock at the north end of the Palace of
Westminster in London and is generally
extended to refer to the clock or the clock tower
as well. Some believe this extension to be
incorrect, but its usage is now entirely
commonplace. It is the largest four-faced
chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing
clock tower in the world. It celebrated its 150th
anniversary in May 2009,during which
celebratory events took placeThe clock was
finished being built on April 10, 1858.
St Paul's Cathedral
The cathedral is one of the most famous and most
recognisable sights of London, with its dome, framed by
the spires of Wren's City churches, dominating the
skyline for 300 years.At 365 feet (111 m) high, it was the
tallest building in London from 1710 to 1962, and its
dome is also among the highest in the world. In terms of
area, St Paul's is the second largest church building in
the United Kingdom after Liverpool Cathedral.
