ATTENDANCE: Being at school every day is critical for learning opportunities. While I realize that there will be
certain circumstances where you may not be able to attend class, there is no real way to make up missed
opportunities to learn from the events that occur in the class on a given day. I will gladly try to help you get missed
assignments; however, there is no way to make up certain class projects such as debates, discussions, and role play
activities. It should be your personal goal as a student to be in class every day.
Course description: Welcome to 9th Grade World History. This course offers a colorful and exciting section of
social studies subjects. By the end of the semester, you will have a solid foundation for entering 10th grade.
Course Purpose: In World History you will develop a greater understanding of the evolution of global processes
and contacts including interactions over time. The course highlights the nature of changes in international
frameworks and their causes and consequences, as well as comparisons among other societies. The course will
give a broad overview of World Religions and Ancient/Medieval influences over the modern world. The course will
then emphasize modern history from 1500 to the present.

STUDENT’S FRIEND booklet. This consists of two packets of readings, each approximately 25 pages long.
This will serve as our main text for the course. Students must have this packet at all times in a notebook
for the course, and each student will only be given one personal copy of the packet. If a student loses
the packet, he/she must pay for a replacement packet.
Ways of the World, supplemental text that will remain at school.
A variety of primary and secondary sources provided by the teacher.

Grade Calculations: Grades are calculated as follows.
Summative (Tests & Projects) 55% (of the 80%)
Formative (Daily, homework, etc) 45% (of the 80%)
Final Exam/End of Course Test = 20%
Restroom Passes: Students will be given a set of six hall passes to use during the semester. These passes must be
used to go to the restroom, office, nurse, or any other place outside the classroom unless another teacher or
administrator has required the student to be out of the room. At the end of the semester, students may use
whatever passes they have left for bonus points on their grades. The passes are worth 20 points each, and the
points may be added to any tests or daily grades. If a student fails to have their passes, and needs to go out of the
room, they will forfeit all of the bonus points.

Required Materials:
- 1”-3” binder for this course only. I give out many different papers and worksheets that the student needs to keep
up with. I require a neat and organized notebook, and students will have a tough time studying if they don’t have a
notebook that is just for the class. Many of the materials I provide will not be graded until late in the course. The
overall notebook will be graded as two test grades at the end of the course. (See additional details on notebook
requirements).
- 1 pack of 3”X5” note cards
-Plenty of loose leaf paper
-Pencils or Pens (blue or black only) I will not have writing utensils to give out.
-A box of 12 colored pencils for maps and drawings.
CLASSROOM RULES:
1. Be in your seat ready to begin class when the bell has finished ringing. The school tardy policy will apply for all
tardies.
2. Respect all others and their property in words and actions!
3. I have provided a freshly-painted and welcoming setting. No food or drink. Don’t graffiti nor litter my room!
4. No mobile phones or iPods without my permission, unless I tell you to look something up. I will permit use of a
book reader like a Kindle, Nook, iPad as long as you are using them according to district policy.
5. All other school rules are covered in the handbook. School discipline policies will be enforced.
6. NO DISRUPTIONS OR BEING OFF TASK WHEN DOING ANY INDIVIDUAL, GROUP, OR WHOLE CLASS
WORK, INCLUDING LISTENING TO LECTURES. BOTH WILL RESULT IN A CONSEQUENCE!
Academic dishonesty: Any cheating detected on tests, quizzes, or homework/classwork will receive a
ZERO, with a telephone call to the parent. A second offence of cheating will be referred to the assistant
principal for disciplinary action. Group work where we help each other learn is not considered cheating.
You will know the difference.
Questions about grades: No class time will be given to discuss a problem with a grade. The best way to
discuss this with me is through e-mail or by making an appointment with me. This policy is both to protect
class time as well as maintain confidentiality. Please don’t interpret it as inapproachability on the
instructor’s part. I will work with you to get a better grade. We need to use time in class wisely. I am always
available between classes.
WORLD HISTORY NOTEBOOKS: Students will also use their 1 inch 3 ring binders to create a “WORLD HISTORY
NOTEBOOK” in which students will perform daily work, take notes, and create a resource for studying for tests.
These notebooks will have random checks for completion and accuracy so that points may be awarded for creating
this study tool. Students will be responsible for doing all assignments in creating their notebooks. At the end of the
semester each student’s notebook will be taken up and given a grade worth two test grades, and will be based on
completion of the tasks in the notebook, and on the orderliness of the contents.
Parent Contacts:
I try to make contact with parents in some fashion very frequently. These contacts are mainly made by progress
reports that each student takes home every three weeks. I also contact parents by email and phone calls. I try to
avoid calling if possible due to the fact that I know that many parents, like me, are busy or have unpredictable
hours. Please feel free to contact me on the phone, or via messaging whenever you have a question about grades
or other issues. If I am not able to answer right away, I will contact you back as soon as possible.
