resources
information you can rely on
What are databases?
• Databases are online subscription services that pull
information from many sources.
• Because it is a subscription, databases are not free
• Some databases have information from past and present
magazines, journals, and newspapers.
• Information contained in databases from online journals
are written by experts in the field and reviewed by their
peers.
• Articles in databases from newspapers and magazines
are the same as those in the print versions.
Why use databases instead of the
Web?
• Information in many databases has been
reviewed and considered accurate.
• Information from websites needs to be evaluated
by the user.
• While there are many great resources on the web,
information in databases is considered more
reliable which makes conducting research faster
and more efficient.

What are online encyclopedias?
• Online databases are a paid subscription service, just as
databases are.
• Online encyclopedias contain the same information as
print encyclopedias, however, because it is online the
information is continually updated.
• Online encyclopedias get information from only one
source—the publisher of the encyclopedia, written by
hired researchers.
• The information has been verified and is considered
reliable.
• Most articles also include links to websites that have
been reviewed by the publisher.
