I chose this theory because Donald Gaskins was clearly affected by the company he had surrounding him. One of the reasons that this theory explains Donald is because of the values of the ones that had the greatest influence in his life that Donald valued as a kid. By the way he was treated as a child, with being abused, beaten, or not treated correctly around his house caused him to not have good values. This caused him to act out in public and school due to how he was treated at home. When Donald dropped out of school he started to engage in criminal behavior with his peers. As his criminal activity became more frequent throughout the years, he began to think it was okay to commit crimes, and each time he committed a crime they got worse and more intense for each crime that he committed. Most of the reason for these crimes he committed originated from his childhood. • There are many reasons that he committed so many crimes throughout his life that started from his childhood. One reason is since he valued his mother so much. His mother showed little attention to Donald when he was a child. This caused him to neglect women very much. Because his mother never really taught him much of anything including his name, he found that criminal activity and bad behavior is the only thing he could turn to, or learn from his childhood. Also, when his mother never stopped him from dropping out of school he had no one to really tell him, or influence him on what was the right thing to do since she was the only one he really valued during that time. All in all, due to Donald’s childhood and how he was raised, I consider him to fall into the Differential Association Theory. FACTS • He claimed he killed over 100 people but many thought his confessions were simply for publicity • Highly debatable topic of how many people Gaskins really killed • Some say he was never treated poorly • Some say he was treated tremendously with love and attention while he was growing up and was never beaten • One fact that can’t be disputed is that he was a psychopath from a young age and had no regard to human life
