ASSIGNMENT 1 ERT 206 It is a group assignment. Each group must submit 1 assignment. Please hand in before 12th June 2015. Marks will be deducted for late submission. Marks will be deducted for those who do not have cover that consist of title, group number (eg: A1) and name of group members. Thanks! 1. Is there any difference between intensive properties of saturated vapor at a given temperature and the vapor of a saturated mixture at the same temperature? 2. A heat engine is operating on a carnot cycle and has a thermal efficiency of 75 percent. The waste heat from this engine is rejected to a nearby lake at 15 °C at a rate of 800 kJ/min. Determine a) the power input of the engine; and b) the temperature of the source. 3. A 600-MW steam power plant, which is cooled bt a nearby river has a thermal efficiency of 40 percent. Determine the rate of heat transfer to the river water. Will the actual heat transfer rate be higher or lower than this value? Please explain why. 4. A piston-cylinder device initially contains 1.4 kg saturated liquid water at 200 °C. Now heat is transferred to the water until volume quadruples and the cylinder contained contains saturated vapor only. Determine a) the volume of the tank, b) final Temperature and pressure, c) internal change of the water. 5. A cylinder contains 0.014 m3 of a fluid at 7 bar having a specific enthalpy of 695 kJ/kg, and a specific volume of 0.00125 m3/kg. Heat energy is supplied until the volume of the fluid becomes 0.28 m3, the pressure remaining at 7 bar. If the final specific internal energy of the fluid is 885 kJ/kg, calculate: a. the mass of fluid b. the final specific volume c. the heat energy supplied d. the work energy transferred. -HIZ-
