I. Second class in the Career Success Pathways
program in the RCSC major created to assist
students applying to transition from the RCSC
Pre-Major into the RCSC Major.
II. Students will create both a resume and a
cover letter utilizing Career Services formatting.
III. Research companies to determine possible
internship and/or career goals.
IV. Learn fundamentals for branding including
appropriate dress and “elevator speech.”
V. Enhance interviewing capabilities with the
coaching from retailing experts. Will cover one
on one interviewing, panel interviews, and phone
interviews.
VI. Learn practices for enhancing portfolio such
as club membership and volunteering.
VII. Start process for future internships.
1. No late work accepted:
Assignments are due at the beginning of
class on the assigned date. Emailed
assignments will not be accepted unless
students are instructed to email
assignment.
2. All assignments must be typed unless
instructor states otherwise.
3. No Makeups. Must attend all scheduled
events such as visit to Career Services.
4. Lates constitute six minutes or more late
for class. Three lates or more can lower
your grade.
5. One or more unexcused absences (dean’s
excuse only acceptable absence) can
result in a lower grade. More than one
absence will result in being dropped from
the course and making the student
ineligible for progression into the RCSC
Major this semester. Notify instructor
about any anticipated lates via email to
the professor not your classmates prior to
class.
GRADING POLICIES:

6. Instructor retains the right to administer
“surprise” quizzlings and assignments as
needed.
7. Failure to present on assigned dates will
result in zero points for the assignment.
8. Cheating will not be tolerated and can
result in dismissal from the course with a
failing grade.
Instructor will post any assignment or exam
changes on D2L and will announce changes in
class if possible.
POINT DISTRIBUTION:
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 70 – 79%
D = 60% – 69%
F = BELOW 60%
TEACHING FORMAT:
Each class will include a lecture/demonstration
section and then a hands-on practice for the
students, or an event for student participation.
1. This is an active listening and note-taking
environment so no laptops are allowed unless
they are deemed necessary by the DRC.
2. This is an active participation class, all students
will be required to participate in numerous
activities throughout the five week session.

Instructor retains the right to make changes to the syllabus and grading format as needed. Students
will be notified in advance on the D2L course website and in class.
1. All holidays or special events observed by organized religions, and sanctioned by the University
of Arizona will be honored for those students who request specific time off for observance of
such holidays and events. Absences preapproved by the UA Dean of Students (or dean’s
designee) will be honored.

5. Cell phones must be turned off and removed from desks during class. Texting during class will
be viewed the same as talking inappropriately during class and will not be tolerated.

Attendance at two information sessions outside of the class will be required. See assignment

8. If a student is concerned about a grade received on an assignment or an exam, they will have 48
hours after the grade is posted on D2L to notify the teacher. Grades are not negotiable.

DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP #1
OBJECTIVES:
1) branding yourself; knowing your strengths;
the importance of first impressions; professional
image-making; develop an elevator speech.
Know your major!
Due today: 1. Print out and bring to class the
worksheets from Workshop #1 (posted on D2L).
Will fill them out in class and turn them in at the
end of class.
HOMEWORK: Due on 2/25:
1. Research two companies that you are
interested in interning or having a career with.
Use the Company Report Assignment sheets in
the Class Notes as the template. Submit via D2L
Dropbox.
Wednesday February 18th
2. Attend at least one company/speaker
presentation. Must attend a total of two
presentations prior to 3/25. Must be a partner of
the Terry J. Lundgren Center for Retailing or get
prior-approval from Felicia for a non-partner.

CAREER SERVICES WORKSHOP #2

Wednesday February 25th
Due today: 1.Two company reports turn in via
D2L Dropbox by 9:00am. Turn in at least one of
the company/speaker presentation summaries
via D2L Dropbox.
OBJECTIVES:
1) Tour Career Services and attend an
information session at Career Services regarding
cover letters and resumes for college students.
2) Clubs/SAB presentations.
3) How to manage expectations.
HOMEWORK: Due on 3/4:

2. Attend at least one company/speaker
presentation. Must attend a total of two
presentations prior to 10/23. Must be a partner
of the Terry J. Lundgren Center for Retailing or

WEEK III
INTERNSHIP EXPLORATION WORKSHOP #3
Wednesday March 4th
Due today: 1. Cover letter and resume. Turn in
hard copy to the instructor.
2. Turn in at least one of the company/speaker
presentation summaries via D2L Dropbox.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Internship exploration. Panel of retailing
executives will give a presentation and answer
student questions. RCSC interns will also give a
presentation.
HOMEWORK due 3/11:
1. Attend at least one company/speaker
presentation. Must attend a total of two
presentations prior to 3/25. Must be a partner of
the Terry J. Lundgren Center for Retailing or get
prior-approval from Felicia for a non-partner.

WEEK IV
MOCK INTERVIEW WORKSHOP #4
OBJECTIVES:
1) Interviews; will be scheduled for an interview
session with a retailing executive. 2. Practice
one on one interview; image enhancement for
interviewing; appropriate clothing; proper
etiquette for most interviewing venues.
Due today: 1. Turn in at least one of the
company/speaker presentation summaries for a
total of two via D2L Dropbox.
Note: must wear business attire. Event at Career
Services.
Wednesday March 11th
WEEK V
IN-CLASS PRESENTATION WORKSHOP #5
OBJECTIVES:
1) Learn proper classroom presentation skills.
2) Practice these skills by presenting in teams.
Instructor will assign topics and teams in class.
