May each and every mother feel affirmed as an individual and comforted and warmed by the love of their children and family. May you be blessed on Mother’s Day with joy and happiness. DPHS is deeply grateful for the love and care bestowed upon the boys and the school by our mothers and full of respect for what it means to be a mother, the enormity and complexity of your role as mother, the hard work and the many sacrifices that mothers make and the unconditional love that mothers bestow so generously upon their children and family. Mothers are kindly invited to the Senior or Junior assemblies this Friday, 11 May. The assembly will be dedicated to Mothers and most especially our DPHS Mums. Appointment of a CEO and Business Manager at DHS DPHS takes pleasure in acknowledging the recent appointment of Mike Fennell, the out-going Headmaster of King Edward VII School in Gauteng as the newly appointed CEO and Business Manager of DHS. We assure DHS of our continued support and look forward to a happy and rewarding association with Mr Fennell. DHS have requested they be given an opportunity in the very near future to introduce Mike Fennell to DPHS and our parents. A request we very much welcome and an occasion we look forward to. BBB Fundraising Initiative School would like to thank all parents and boys who took part in this fundraising drive. The level of participation has been outstanding and it is heart-warming to see how many people subscribe to a better looking and more functional DPHS. An amount of around R57 000 has been raised and will go a long way towards enhancing the look of our prestigious school. Progress on the project has been steady and we are hoping to have everything complete in the very near future. All boys who have participated have been acknowledged and allowed to wear their builder’s hard hat at break time. Thank you to WORKWEAR DEPOT in Pietermaritzburg ( www.workweardepot.co.za ) for sponsoring the 81 hard hats for the project. JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS I trust that everyone enjoyed the extended long weekend and was able to benefit by finding extra time to relax and spend together with family and friends. The Grade Two Cake Sale was a wonderful success. It was organized to raise funds for Reach for a Dream’s Bear Project which the Grade Twos have adopted as their Campaign of Kindness project for this year. The boys did a superb job of advertising this event with colourful posters and flyers and the staff organizers, parents who supplied the eats, mothers who manned the tables and staff and boys who supported this very worthwhile cause are all thanked most sincerely. A total of R5234.00 was collected! This morning Anna Rubycz from the Reach for a Dream Foundation came to school to meet with the Grade Twos. She explained the wonderful work that this Foundation does to bring hope and joy to children with life-threatening diseases and she very gratefully received the cheque presented by the Grade Two boys. She was accompanied by one of the 53 bears which the money will be used to buy in order to bring some joy and comfort to hospitalized children and informed the boys that the tag attached with the recipient’s name would also indicate that it was donated by the DPHS boys. Well done to all involved! Parents’ Week is underway. This is a very important week in the school calendar as it formally affords every parent the opportunity to meet with their son’s class teacher to discuss his well-being and progress. The class teachers see this parent-teacher interaction as an essential element in assisting the boys to enjoy their school programme and achieve their potential. I trust that the parents are finding this interview time to be of great value. The Grade Threes are working very hard in preparation for the Mothers’ Day assembly this Friday. Tea will be served before the 08h30 JP presentation and after the assembly the JP mums will be invited to their son’s classroom for a short visit so that the boys can present them with a small gift. We wish all our mothers a very happy Mothers’ Day on Sunday and trust that they will be deservedly spoilt! MERIT AWARDS Congratulations to this week’s recipients. GENERAL Ladies’ Evening The DPHS Mothers’ Committee Ladies evening was a huge success. Mary Steward had us rolling in the aisles with her hilarious stories of the various stages of womanhood. The tables were magnificent and a huge amount of effort was put in by all the mums to add meaning to theme – ‘Womanhood.’ A huge thank you to all those Prep mums who bought tables, your support and enthusiasm was infectious and we are so looking forward to next year and doing it all again. More thanks must go to those fabulous people who organized sponsorship for the goody bags and lucky draws. It is always so appreciated. The Mother’s’ Committee were overwhelmed by the fantastic response to the request to collect handbags for the JesFoord Foundation at the recent Ladies Evening. Since the theme of the evening was ‘Womanhood’, the committee chose to give back to the community in some meaningful way and ‘Woman helping Woman’ seemed like a perfect fit! On the evening, the ladies collected 70 Handbags packed according to the JesFoord guidelines for the Foundation. We had a very generous donation from a parent of one of the items for the bags and Unilever more than came to the party by very kindly donated bars of Lux soap, Impulse deodorants and mini Dawn Lotions for the bags. The handbags were delivered to the Foundation on Tuesday. ‘In a desperate time of need, a small yet loving gesture can make the world of difference.’ If you would like to know more about the JesFoord Foundation, please visit the website: www.jff.org.za for the full inspiring story and all the wonderful causes Jes is driving.
