DPHS NEWS AND RESULTS BULLETIN 06: WEDNESDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2013 The Headmaster Media Centre Finance : : : rneave@dphs.co.za linda@dphs.co.za michellew@dphs.co.za TELEPHONE: 031-3122154 Admissions Marketing Sports Office : : : denise@dphs.co.za linda@dphs.co.za michaeldick@dphs.co.za FAX: 031-3032361 FROM THE EXECUTIVE HEADMASTER Playing away from home is always difficult and especially challenging for a sportsman. Our school cricketers and their coaches very bravely and skilfully contested every ball that was bowled and every run that was scored against Trinityhouse, St Benedicts and St Stithians during their tour of Gauteng. In most instances the outfields were slow and the boundary big! The boys fielded and bowled well but were guilty at times of trying to force the run rate which played into the hands of their opponents. Our school boys’ golf team lost narrowly to a very professional St Stithians team. The very in-form staff team of Brett Botha and Malcolm Phillips restored the DPHS honour leaving the St Stithians Headmaster, Alistair Stewart and his partner feeling very sorry for themselves at the end of eighteen holes. The very fit and well-trained school water polo team were unstoppable and played to a clean sweep by beating St Benedicts, St Davids and St Stithians. They will soon be travelling to Port Elizabeth to participate in the Grey Primary water polo festival. DPHS are very grateful to our friends at St Stithians, St Benedicts and Trinityhouse for their kind, generous and gracious hospitality. I commend the DPHS boys, coaches and the large contingent of parent supporters on the success and enjoyment of the tour. Thank you for all being great ambassadors and a credit to our school! FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL Our second DPHS Open Day was conducted earlier today. I was filled with a feeling of immense pride while accompanying one of the groups, of parents interested in learning more of our school, around the school and to the Reception Unit. An atmosphere that may be best described as one of enthusiasm, anticipation and purposeful activity pervaded the school. The parent’s brief visits to the various teaching spaces revealed boys involved in the learning experiences and teachers passionate about their role in fulfilling the school’s Vision and their contribution to the unique DPHS Experience. Reflection on the DPHS offering of the extended day curriculum, particularly after leading an Open Day tour of the school facilities, reminds one of the rich offering to the boys of DPHS: the boys’ experience in and out of the classroom, their interaction with all the members of the staff, the performing and visual arts component, their exposure to science and technology, the provision of opportunities for participation in team and individual sports, the recent Grade 3 group’s uShaka excursion, the past weekend’s biennial sports tour of cricket, water polo and golf teams to Gauteng, the impending Senior Primary Grade excursions. Education policy analyst, Xolani Majola, in a recent media article wrote: “Schools must be places where learners are encouraged to explore, research and discover new knowledge and facts about life beyond the school curriculum. Schools must be places where learners become leaders, team players and contributors to the worlds of art, music, technology and science, as well as other areas associated with their personal growth and development. Schools must not simply fulfil the requirements of the academic curriculum and stick steadfastly to its dictates. Rather, they should also become places of constant creativity and innovation.” It is only in schools enjoying the support of their parents and their community that this will be achieved. And so it is at DPHS. Thank YOU for YOUR contribution. CONGRATULATIONS The following boys have been selected for KZN tennis and will play from 1st to 3rd March in Pietermaritzburg in the Inter Zonal Tournament where the KZN Team will be selected: James McIlwraith (A team), Murray Finlay (B team) and Tyler Grant (1st Reserve) Nicholas Dixon participated in the Samsung Chelsea Football Club Youth Football Camp. We said a sad farewell to Wendy Stieger last week, who has been the Green Group Locum Teacher for the past fortnight, whilst Val Cotterell has been away in Johannesburg visiting her new grandson. We so enjoyed having Wendy as part of the Reception Unit team. For parents who still want to obtain a MySchool Supporter Card, forms are available in the office. JUNIOR PRIMARY NEWS After a slight delay the first truck containing jungle gym equipment arrived at DPHS on Monday morning and so the reality of the JP Adventure Jungle Gym came one step closer! The installation progress is being closely watched with much excitement. We were very pleased to welcome the visitors for our Open Day to the Junior Primary Department. Two Grade Two classes were at Ball Skills, the Grade Three classes enjoyed their weekly Visual Arts and Media as well as Music and Drama lessons and the other classes were constructively occupied in the variety of activities which form part of the busy JP classroom programme. Our guests were able to mingle with the boys and staff in these spaces, as well as all the other areas in the school, and were so impressed with what they observed. DPHS vsSt Davids DPHS vs St Stithians WON 5-3 4-3 8-2 LOST Golf Last Friday, on a bright and clear Johannesburg morning, DPHS top four golfers took on St Stithians at their home course. Bryanstan Country Club was in championship condition but not without the usual challenges of the sport. The format selected was better ball matchplay. At the half way (golfer’s breakfast and energade) point, St Stithians was leading on both fourballs but by only one hole each. Unfortunately the final result has seen the floating trophy remain in the St Stithians cabinet. Slade Sterling and James Harris finished four holes down with three to play and William Dowsett and Liam Ross finished three holes down with two to play. Despite an unfavourable result, five hours of light banter and laughs were shared by both teams throughout the round and good golfing friends were made. Next year the annual challenge will take place at Royal Durban Golf Course where we hope the trophy can return to its home.
