2015 6A State Wrestling Championships
STAT NOTES

Colonial Forge won its 5th Team Championship in a team race that was a
foregone conclusion as they brought 13 competitors to the tournament and 11
placed in the top four, including three Champions. Returning 7 placers, they will
be a strong candidate to win their 6th title next year. Only 15 schools have been
crowned AAA/5A/6A team champion in the 67 years since wrestling began in
Virginia (1949).

All 14 State Championships were won by number-one seeds. Seven of the finals
matched two number-one seeds.

As usual, seniors dominated the 2015 6A State Championships, 27 placed in the
top four. Of the 29 underclassmen who placed (17 juniors, 9 sophomores and
3 freshmen), 5 were State Champions and will be back next season to try again.

Seven State Champions from last year competed in this tournament. Five
repeated: Josh Nail/Colonial Forge/126; Justin Yorkdale/Westfield/132;
Cole DePasquale/Robinson/182; Tyler Love/Centreville/195 and
Patrick Grayson/Colonial Forge/220.

Average record of the State Champs 39-4 (one Champ’s record not found)

Odd stat: according to trackwrestling there were 31 pins in 6A in a combined
time of 113:28 minutes/seconds, while in 5A there were 21 pins in 69:57.
THE CHAMPIONS
106 – Killian Cardinale, Sophomore, Patriot, is his school and Coach Brian Foley’s
first State Champ. Patriot High School opened in 2011 and Killian was their first state
placer, finishing 4th last year. He was also Conference 8 and North Region Champion.
He was a quarter-finalist at the Beast of the East. He plans to wrestle in college.
Killian’s dad Josh wrestled for George Mason University (GMU) in the mid-1990’s.
113 – Victor Echeverria, Junior, Centreville, became his school’s 6th State Champion
(8 Championships) and Coach John Belyea’s second Champion at Centreville.
Coach Belyea previously coached at Langley High School for ten years where he
coached 2X State Champion David Helmer (2008 & 2009/152). Victor won the tough
2014 Mount Mat Madness tournament in Maryland, and placed 5th at the 2014 Beast of
the East, which is ranked as the toughest tournament in the country. He started
wrestling in the 7th grade and has qualified for the state tournament each year, placing
4th last year. Victor is also a Youth Leader at his church. With no firm plans yet, he
hopes to study Criminology and wrestle in college.

2015 6A State Wrestling Championships
120 – River Curtis, Freshman, Battlefield, became his school’s second State Champion
(3 Championships) and Coach Brian Shaffer’s first State Champion. Coach Shaffer
previously was the Head Coach at George Mason University (GMU) for ten years (1995
thru 2005), and prior to that was head coach at American University for three years.
Coach Shaffer also was a Virginia State Champion (Woodbridge/1986/132). River’s
DNA probably destined him to become a successful wrestler. His dad Johnny was a
2X All-American at GMU (1992/8th/190, 1993/7th/190), and was a highly accomplished
professional MMA fighter (9-2 record at 235). River also plays football and lacrosse.
His brother Beau, an 8th grader, will be joining the Battlefield team next year and a
younger sister Callie, a 5th grader, also wrestles and will continue the Curtis family
tradition at Battlefield in a few years. River’s two little sisters, Addison and Willow, have
not started wrestling - yet. Two of River’s cousins also competed at this State
tournament for Osbourn Park HS: Glenn (3rd at 195) and Shane (qualifier at 160).
Their dad Howard Curtis also wrestled for GMU (1990 NCAA qualifier at 158). The
senior Curtis brothers run/coach the Manassas Marauders Youth Club team, which
wrestles in the Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL). Johnny’s home includes a 50 X
30 wrestling room addition, where his club team and other wrestlers or MMA fighters
practice – year round. This is a serious wrestling family!
126 – Josh Nail, Junior, Colonial Forge, won his second State Championship, claiming
the title at 120 last year. He also is a three-time finalist, having been runner-up at 106
as a freshman in 2013. Josh’s title is the 16th Individual Championship for Coach Bill
Swink, who has been the Forge head coach since the school opened in 1999. Josh not
only excels on the mat, but in the classroom as well, where he maintains a 4.3 GPA.
132 – Justin Yorkdale, Senior, Westfield, repeated as State Champ after winning the
crown at 126 last year. Justin is the second Individual Champion for second year
Coach Tucker Surbrook and his school’s 8th title. He joins two other multi-State
Champs from Westfield: Austin Fallon (2X -2009 & 2010 at 189) and Beau Donahue
(3X - 2011/140, 2012/152 and 2013/145). Beau is currently wrestling at North Carolina
State. Justin’s twin brother Ryan competed at this tournament and finished 4th at 138.
Their dad Glenn is an assistant coach. Justin and Ryan are considering attending
either GMU, Hofstra or Virginia Tech.
138 – J.D. Stone, Senior, Colonial Forge, became his school and Coach Bill Swink’s
13th State Champion (17 Individual Championships). Coach Swink has been the
Forge’s head coach since the school opened in 1999. JD is a 4X State placer, having
finished 4th, 6th, and 2nd, before climbing to the top of the podium this year. JD also
excels in the classroom and maintains a 3.8 GPA. He plans to study and wrestle at
Campbell University under first year head coach Cary Kolat (2X NCAA Champion).
JD’s dad Jeff wrestled for Potomac HS (1991 NW Region Champ and 5th at States at
130), and wrestled at West Liberty University where he was a NAIA All-American.

2015 6A State Wrestling Championships
145 – Austin Riggs, Senior, Robinson, is his school’s 24th State Champion (32
Individual Championships), and Coach Brian Hazard’s 14th Champion (17 Individual
Championships). Austin was also the 2015 Conference 5 and North Region Champion.
He is a 4X State Placer, having previously finished 2nd/2014/132, 3rd/2013/126 and
7th/2012/120. He also was the 2012 NHSCA Freshman National Champion and is a
NHSCA Academic All-American. Austin has battled injury and illness in his 4 years at
Robinson but was able to attain 111 victories. He was also a member of the Rams
Cross Country team. Austin also was a member of VAWA’s Team Virginia. He will be
attending the Naval Academy Prep School next year.
152 – Conor Grammes, Junior, McLean, is his school’s 5th State Champion, (7
Individual Championships) and Coach Ken Jackson’s first. Coach Jackson wrestled
for Stonewall Jackson (Manassas) 1997-2000. McLean’s last State Champion was
Jason Johnson (2X - 1992 and 1993/171). Conor is a 3X State placer, having finished
7th and 6th the last two years. In the classroom Conor maintains a 3.5 GPA. His
