Self-Reflection Assignment Part One and Two NUR 144
Learning Objectives
At the end of this assignment, the student will:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Demonstrate ability to examine performance on clinical objectives within a formal paper.
Understand how to write an objective.
Relate a personal clinical objective to an identified area for improvement within a clinical objective.
Utilize verbs effectively to construct one personal clinical objective.
Self Reflection Part One: Over the last several weeks you have had the opportunity to work in the clinical setting. Now
it is time to reflect on that experience and this assignment requires you to develop a paper based on that reflection.
Reflection is defined as…… the results of careful consideration. Consider the strengths and weaknesses of your
performance in the clinical setting, using the learning objectives below. This reflection paper should address your
strengths and weaknesses in each of the following clinical objectives:
1. Implement safe nursing care incorporating theoretical knowledge, the nursing process and concepts of
critical thinking for the individual patient.
2. Employ communication techniques when interacting with the patient and members of the healthcare team.
3. Demonstrate caring behaviors acknowledging the diversity of the individual patient.
4. Implement the management concepts of organization and collaboration while caring for the individual
patient.
5. Incorporate knowledge of the ethical and legal standards of nursing practice when caring the individual
patient.
**Several questions to consider as you write your self reflection are:
What do I do very well? What do I do well and could do better?
What areas do I need the most improvement? What other experiences do I need?
Additionally, please add a paragraph that addresses your perceptions of the Community experience (role of the nurse for
those of you in the school settings and developmental issues for those of you who were in Head Start).
Tips for Success: In the NUR 144 syllabus is the Clinical Performance Objectives that list nursing actions which define
each objective and will help as you to construct your paper.
Example: Clinical objective #1: My strengths concerning objective #1 are that I was able to collect pertinent data using
the database and could correctly identify two priority nursing diagnosis. I spent considerable time looking up the
pathophysiology of my patient’s medical condition, and was prepared with medication cards. One of my weaknesses at
clinical week#1 was my inability to distinguish adventitious breath sounds. In the first two weeks of the clinical rotation,
I was unable to discern the difference between rales and rhonchi. I went to the lab to practice breath sounds and also
discussed my concerns with my instructor. Whenever there was an opportunity in the clinical setting to listen to
adventitious breath sounds I took it. On week #4 my instructor assigned me a patient with pneumonia. I was able to
recognize that the patient had rales in the lower bases of the lungs and also an expiratory wheeze. My instructor informed
me that my assessment was correct.
Format: The paper should be concise, logically organized, grammatically correct and professional in nature. It
should contain a cover sheet with your name, institution (DTCC), date, and title of paper. Each of the five objectives
should be addressed (Specific examples from clinical should be included). The paper should be 3 pages (typed), 12 font,
double-spaced, with a one-inch margin.
Student’s Personal Clinical Objective: At the end of this paper please state a personal clinical objective you would
like to meet at the completion of your next clinical rotation in this same course. Now that you have reflected on your
clinical experience in NUR 143/144, please review the areas needing improvement that you have identified. Choose one
area that is important to your growth towards becoming a safe and effective nurse and write a personal clinical objective
to help you achieve the change you are working toward. The instructions for writing a personal clinical objective are
located below.
Write a personal clinical objective – The objective must be:
1. Related to an intended outcome (What is it that you are going to do?)
2. Specific and measurable. (Tell how & when you are going to accomplish this objective.)
3. Focus on your performance.
4. Related to a self identified area for improvement from the self-reflection part one, and has been approved by
your clinical instructor.
Action Verbs for writing an objective. Choose one of the following action verbs to write your goal:
Accept responsibility
Demonstrate commitment to
Implement
Practice
Analyze
Demonstrate
Interpret
Perform
Apply
Design
Manage
Prioritize
Calculate
Explain
Measure
Recognize
Construct
Handle
Organize
Utilize
Two Examples of Personal Clinical Objective:
I will demonstrate the 5 rights of medication administration by the end of week 12(14). I will perform a breast feeding
teaching intervention for a new mother attempting to breast feed on the postpartum unit by the end of week 12 (14).
Due date and Criteria for Grading: Part One will receive a pass/fail grade. Part one of this assignment is due on the
Friday following the completion of your first and second clinical rotation (one for NUR 143 and one for NUR 144).
Failure to complete either assignment as directed, and or on time will result in an unsatisfactory grade at the interim
clinical evaluation. If the paper is not submitted according to directions the student will be expected to make the
necessary changes and resubmit. If the student fails to resubmit the paper, or does not submit the paper at all during the
semester, this will result in a failing clinical grade. Submit to your clinical instructor via email.
Self-Reflection Assignment: Part Two NUR143/144
Taking the personal clinical objective you identified in Part one of the Self Reflection please review the area you
identified as needing improvement. During your third and fourth rotation in NUR 143/144, you will work to achieve the
objective you identified in Part One of the assignment for that course. At the end of week 11 (third rotation) or 14 (fourth
rotation), you will send your Clinical Instructor a written document of your experience in meeting your objective. In a
word document (one or two paragraphs in length), you will have the following details documented: a) your name, b) your
personal clinical objective, c) if it was achieved, and d)what you did to achieve this objective.
Due date and Criteria for Grading: Part Two will also receive a pass/fail grade. Part two of this assignment is due
on the Friday following the completion of your third and fourth clinical rotation. Failure to complete either
assignment as directed, and or on time will result in an unsatisfactory grade at the final clinical evaluation. If the
assignment is not submitted according to directions the student will be expected to make the necessary changes and
resubmit. If the student fails to resubmit the assignment, or does not submit the assignment at all during the semester, this
will result in a failing clinical grade.
