What is a drug?
A drug is any substance, solid, liquid or gas that ______________________ physical
and/or psychological _____________________________.
The drugs of most concern to the community are those that affect the (CNS)
_____________________________. They act on the brain and can change the way a
person thinks, feels or behaves. These are the psychoactive drugs.
Where do drugs come from?
Drugs are derived from a range of sources. Many are found in plants, for example,
_____________ in tobacco; _____________ in coffee; and cocaine from the
_________________. Morphine and codeine are derived from the opium poppy, while
heroin is made from morphine or codeine. Marijuana is the leaf, buds and seed heads of the
cannabis plant and hashish and hash oil are made from the plant’s resin.
Alcohol is the product of the natural process of _________________, which happens
when fruit, grain or vegetables _________________. Fungi, such as magic mushrooms and
some types of cactus plants are considered drugs because of their hallucinogenic properties.
Medicines are manufactured from both natural and artificial chemicals.
Classifying Drugs
The two most common ways of classifying drugs are:
1. _____________________________________________________________________
2. _____________________________________________________________________
Classifying by legal status
Most legal drugs are subject to ________________________________ that affect their
availability, quality and price. Illegal or ____________ drugs have no quality or price
controls. This means that anyone using these drugs can never be sure of the drugs
_________________________. Various batches of an illegally manufactured drug may
have different mixtures of the drug and other additives, such as talcum powder, sugar and
caffeine. Sometimes the additives are _______________________.
Unit 3 – Page 3
SPCC Gosford – Year 7-8 PDH – Drugs
Classifying by effects
There are three main types of drugs, classified according to their effect on the CNS.
1. Depressant drugs - ____________________________________. In small
quantities they can cause a person to feel more relaxed and less inhibited. In larger
quantities they may cause unconsciousness, vomiting and, in some cases,
______________. Depressants affect concentration and coordination. They slow
down a person’s ability to __________________________________________.
2. Stimulant drugs – stimulants act on the central nervous system to
__________________________________________________. Stimulants can
make the user feel more awake, alert or confident. Stimulants increase
_________________________________ and blood pressure. Other physical
effects include reduced appetite, dilated pupils, talkativeness, agitation, and sleep
disturbance.
Large quantities of stimulants can ‘over-stimulate’ the user, causing anxiety,
__________________________, headaches, stomach cramps, aggression and
paranoia. Prolonged or sustained use of strong stimulants can also cause these
effects. Strong stimulants can mask some of the effects of depressant drugs, such as
alcohol making it difficult for the user to judge exactly what effects the drugs have on
them.
3. Hallucinogenic drugs - ______________________. People who have taken
them may see or hear things that aren’t really there, or what they see may be
distorted in some way. The effects of hallucinogens vary greatly. It is impossible to
predict how they will affect a particular person at a particular time.
Other effects of hallucinogenic drugs include dilation of pupils, loss of appetite,
________________, talking or laughing, a sense of emotional and psychological
euphoria and wellbeing, __________________, sweating,
________________________, loss of contact with reality, irrational or bizarre
behaviour, stomach cramps and nausea.

Examples
What factors determine a drug’s effects?
As well as the effect the drug has on the CNS, there are a number of factors that will
determine how a particular drug will affect an individual including:
 _____________________________________________ - the more used the
greater the effect. Overdose occurs when the amount taken exceeds the body’s
ability to cope.
 ______________________________________ - Generally, drugs that are
injected or inhaled act very quickly and the effects are more intense, while the effects
of drugs eaten or swallowed take longer to occur.
 ____________________________ - height, weight and gender influence drug
effects. The proportion of body fat, rate of metabolism, and the stage of the
menstrual cycle can all influence the intensity and duration of drug effects.
 _________________________________ - how a person is feeling can have a
significant impact on drug effects, as can the social setting of drug use.
 _______________________________ - the first time a person uses the drug,
they have a very low tolerance and are likely to feel the effects really strongly. The
more often the drug is used, generally the less intense the effects will be. This results
in the need to take larger amounts in order to obtain the desired effect.
 _____________________________________ - users often have a primary drug
of choice, but will use one or more other drugs to increase or reduce the effects of
the primary drug. Combining drugs can increase or alter the usual effects, often in
unpredictable ways.
Tolerance and Dependence
With sustained drug use tolerance and dependence can develop. Tolerance means
_____________________________________________________
___________________________________. Dependence means _______
__________________________________________________________
Using higher doses of a drug or using more frequently can lead to more serious problems.

Different types of drug use
Drug use can be categorised into five main areas:
1. ______________________ - when a person tries a drug once or twice out of
curiosity. Novice users run the risk of a _____________
_________________________ and of not knowing how they will react, as well as
the risks that may be associated with the effects of the drug.
2. _________________________ - where a person chooses to use a drug for
enjoyment, particularly to enhance a mood or social occasion.
3. _________________________ - where a drug is used to cope with the demands
of particular situations. For example, ________________
have been used by long distance truck drivers to maintain alertness and by athletes to
gain energy.
4. ______________________ - also known as _____________, where a person
consumes a heavy amount of drugs over a short period of time, or use is
__________________ over a number of days or weeks.
5. _______________________ - where a person becomes dependent on a drug after
prolonged or heavy use over time. They feel a need to take the drug consistently in
order to feel normal, or to avoid
________________________________________________.
Drug laws
Each state has laws governing the manufacture, possession, distribution and use of drugs,
both legal and illegal. Drug laws in Australia distinguish between those who
________________ and those who __________________________ The four main
types of offences related to illegal drugs are:
1. ________ - includes smoking, ___________________, injecting, ingesting or
otherwise introducing a drug of dependence into a person’s body.
2. ________________ - is the most common offence. Possession means having
_______________________ of a drug. This applies to drugs found on the person
and on their _________________, if it is proven that the drugs belong to that
person.
3. ____________________ - is the act of sowing, planting, growing, tending,
nurturing or harvesting a narcotic plant. Any of these activities constitute an offence.
If a person cultivates a ‘____________________
______________’ or intends to sell even a small amount, it is likely that charges for
possession, cultivation and trafficking will be laid.

drink and smoke. He doesn’t usually smoke but has one anyway si that he fits in.
Initially he decides not to drink as he believes it is wrong to get drunk. However, he
changes his mind when he sees that everyone else who is drinking seems to be having

relaxed and has the confidence to talk to other students. He decides to drink more
regularly to help him socialise but feels guilty each time he does.
2. Joel knows that his parents would disapprove of him going to a party where there is
going to be alcohol and smoking so he seeks their approval to stay at a friend’s house

from the station. Joel later discovers that his friend’s parents thought that the boys
were staying at Joel’s house.
3. Stefica’s parents have expressed their opposition to under-age drinking and smoking
and parties without adult supervision. Nevertheless, while her parents are away,
Stefica decides to host a party. Some of her friends want to know if they can smoke
and drink at the party, saying that no-one will come unless they are able to do so.
She says, ‘No’. However, at the party, some of her friends ring through orders for
drinks from a company that delivers to the door. During the party Stefica’s parents

One of the older boys in the club has offered to get him some ‘vitamins’ that are
guaranteed to increase his muscle bulk and improve his performance. Raphael asks
Patrick, a talented sprinter in the pool, if he would try the ‘vitamin’ too as it is a sure
way of improving his performance in the water and making the regional and state
teams. Patrick knows that drug testing is happening in his sport and that those who
are found to take drugs are labelled as cheats and disqualified. He remembers that
drug testing in his sport is only random and then wonders what his chances of being
caught would be. What does Patrick decide to do?
